Digital Storm teases hybrid Steam Machine, reveals $1,469 starting price and not much else

We'll have to wait until CES for a real peek at Digital Storm's forthcoming Steam Machine, but thankfully the show's only a few weeks away. In the meantime, the company's got a few details to offer up, calling the box "one of the most advanced small form factor systems" ever, thanks to options like an NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN graphics card, liquid cooling, airflow thermal management and up to a 700W power supply. The system will offer up both SteamOS and Windows, with a starting price of $1,469. Digital Storm says it opted not to compete with the price of current-gen consoles. Fair enough. In the meantime, here's a dark teaser page for you to stare at for the next couple of weeks.

This is a waste of money since the GTX Titan is now kinda useless outside of a workstation now with Nvidia releasing the GTX 780 Ti, and the GTX780 being only $499US.

 

So it would be much better to build your own steam machine over buying this.

Ambitious, but personally can't see this doing very well... stuck between the consoles that are ~$1000 cheaper and the bajillion options the PC users have, going to be a hard sell.

I think that's going to be the biggest problem with the steam machines.  All they are are typical PCs with SteamOS installed, so anybody that has basic computer knowledge can build their own for much much less than what these companies will charge.

The only thing they'll miss out on is the case, but I don't see that being a big deal.  There are plenty of nice HTPC cases out there.

I think rather than jamming a high end card into a box, someone should market one that is super small that runs mostly indie games. If I could replace my Apple TV with something similarly sized that could play Guacamelee, Spelunky, Bastion, etc, I'd get it.

On the subjective of Steam Machines, Valve posted an announcement inside Steam today:

 

 

Steam Machines and Steam Controller shipping December 13th

 

The time has come! We are ready to begin shipping Steam Machines and Steam Controllers to the 300 selected beta participants. The machines are due to leave the factory on Friday! 

Here are some photos from the production line. 



The 300 selected beta testers are being notified today (at about 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time) that they?ll soon receive Steam hardware and SteamOS for testing. Each selected user is also being awarded a special badge on their Steam Community profile, indicating that they?re a beta participant. In addition, a number of games that run natively on SteamOS are being added to each selected user?s library. 

We?ve had to make the difficult decision to limit our beta to the U.S. only, because of regulatory hurdles. This was not our original plan, and it means we can?t collect beta feedback from Steam customers world-wide, which is pretty unfortunate. All things considered, we?re sure it was the right decision, because the alternative was to delay the whole beta beyond the point when we?d be able to incorporate any feedback into the 2014 products. This decision only affects Valve?s 300 prototype units; the commercial versions of Steam Machines that are for sale in 2014 won?t be affected by this. More information on those will be announced at CES on January 6. 

SteamOS will be made available when the prototype hardware ships. It will be downloadable by individual users and commercial OEMs. (But unless you?re an intrepid Linux hacker already, we?re going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out.) We?ll post info soon about that. Oh, and stay tuned for the in-home streaming beta to begin soon, too!
