Winaero WEI Tool

Winaero WEI Tool brings back the genuine Windows Experience Index feature for Windows 8.1.

As you might be knowing, the Windows Experience Index (WEI) was removed from Windows 8.1. Microsoft left the WEI engine in the OS, but the UI was deleted from This PC/Computer properties. So I decided to code the app with a nice looking, familiar UI.

Winaero WEI Tool is freeware and portable software.

It brings back the genuine Windows Experience Index and features the following abilities:

  • Calculation and re-calculation of assessments and scores.
  • The exact genuine Windows Experience Index look and feel.
  • The real, actual tests and assessments progress and status.

  • The ability to save a screenshot of your Windows Experience Index as a PNG file.
  • The ability to take a screenshot of your Windows Experience Index and upload it to ImgUr with one click!
  • The ability to save your WEI table to an HTML file!

  • Bonus: The background of your WEI score follows the window frame color for a cool appearance. (See video)

Thank you for this awesome piece of software! :) I always wondered why Microsoft removed this feature as it was a quick way to check if the computer/laptop was good.

Because it really doesn't matter at this point. Hardware has caught up to the software, and since Windows' requirements haven't changed much since Vista, the score is rather meaningless.

It's also a very quick way to try and see if perhaps graphics card is failing in some way, without taking the computer in question apart, having to copy or install nontrivial benchmarks and having to connect a high resolution screen. I've taken this shortcut a few times, with success.

I always used it for checking if there was a problem somewhere as well.

I wouldn't have thought that was the point in it because if the computer cannot run Vista, then you can't get WEI to rate your system.

If your computer can't run Vista, chances are it can't run 7 or 8 either, which would still make the score meaningless.

I'd have to agree with Dot. When WEI was removed, I didn't see many people crying.

In fact, I can't remember anyone using WEI as a point of reference for anything except maybe some penis comparisons. :P

It's not really though because it gives quick access to your hardware information and lets you know what components need upgraded. Also, Phouchg mentioned that it's good for checking to see if one of your device's components are faulty.

insignificant software is insignificant. If microsoft thought it was THAT important, they wouldn't have scrapped it with the kernel that they implemented in windows 8. Why do I need to trust software to tell me that my pc cannot run *BLAH*, when most times it can run it anyway? I mean, most games I play are WELL above my minimum system requirements...yet my PC runs them anyway. Flawlessly. Not knocking your efforts, but there's a REASON microsoft didn't include this in 8....it simply wasn't needed nor necessary. ;)

Well, with every Windows upgrade since Vista, i see my 3D score falling down... :)

The entire thing was relative and they changed the scale with every version of Windows. There was never a consistent score between different versions of Windows so it is impossible to make any comparison with any other system basically. They attempted to quantize aspects of your system performance then borked it up by making it inconsistent between versions of Windows.. probably a great reason to remove it honestly.

LOL, it looks like I have the smallest penis here :D

Only 5.0.

I have to think about new hardware :D

Yeah, this was mine and a friends use for it. Continually battling it out with who's got the better computer. Now we've got pretty decent builds with their own special quirks. This is why competition is good. Although I'm now down ~?1800...

History has shown that not all users may share Microsoft's opinion that a feature is insignificant or unnecessary.

Although I only use the WEI ever so often, thank you for the tool, Sergey "hb860".

I've often wondered, what was the point of wei? I see the results of mine, and kind of understand, so far as this dinosaur machine goes, but doesn't suffer under heavy gaming, so it got me wondering...

I do think that the Winaero tool doesn't really work above 7.9.

This is the same result that I get with WEI in Win 7, and if the author hade re-arranged the scale, mine should be bigger fogures. I don't believe that it works.

Max scale is 7.9 in Win7 and beyond (so even more useless as time goes on). It was 5.9 in Vista. I recall reading that they changed the mapping of scale between the OS versions though, so your score can be inconsistent between OS versions. I.e. the scores aren't normalized between OS versions.

See for max score talk:

EDIT: Disclaimer: according to Wikipedia the max score should be 9.9 in Windows 8. I'm not sure if I trust that and I don't feel like verifying at the moment.
