ok so my theory is wrong, some clarification(fastest selling is for weekly basis)

I think this whole next generation will stay close yet again unless MS either drops the ball with exclusive games in which case the ps4 pulls ahead or they cut deals with cable providers and the xb1 is sold as a second set top box option subsidized for less, in which case it'll storm ahead. Only time will tell really.

That's definitely possible.

The only way that doesn't happen is if the US market goes in favor of the X1 in such a way that it compensates for Japan.

Of course, we also don't know how popular next gen consoles will be anyway, considering Japan's move toward mobile/handheld gaming the last several years.

Japanese just aren't interested in American consoles. I don't see any games for Xbox One that would appeal to that audience.

While they don't sell great in Japan compared to the others the 360 did better than the original did and the one could do better as well.  It doesn't take much IMO, more jrpgs is what's needed to start.  That said out of all the markets out there, Japan is the smaller one.

There's still plenty of gamers in the US who care about japanese titles(myself included). It's just that we're hugely overshadowed by all the idiots who would rather just shovel money onto more generic military shooters or zombie games or whatnot.

I used to be a huge fan of the Japanese games, but I haven't really been impressed with anything they put out in at least the last 5 years. They used to be really awesome, but I think they just ran out of ideas or have bad implementation at this point.

I'm one of those fans as well.

Unfortunately, we can't blame it all on being overshadowed by shooters. Some Japanese developers have simply lost the touch they once had for bringing out great Japanese content, especially jrpgs (I'm looking at you SquareEnix....) or they are turning to focus more on mobile games (Capcom...) than AAA Japanese content.

Demons and Dark Souls have sold well! Persona 5 should do good next year, and I believe Ni No Kuni reached a million.

Japanese titles still have popularity from time to time.

On that note, everyone go buy Tokyo Jungle. I want Tokyo Jungle 2 on my PS4.

I wish more of these game were on both platforms though. I know plenty of people that would be excited to buy them even if they only owned an xbox.

Haven't bought a COD game since COD3, and haven't played Halo online religiously since Halo 3 so...no. I'm assuming those are the games you're alluding to.  But cry me a river.  My point still stands.  Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they don't get to be popular or that others can't like them.

Well outside of hardcore WiiU fans, I would say most people are only thinking about the PS4 and X1 right now as the 'next gen' consoles.

I'm just saying I doubt he made that statement out of malice against the WiiU.

He just stated it like most people are stating it right now.

I mean just look around, most people are all excited about the next gen console releases now and I don't hear many people talking about the WiiU as part of that group.

Well I think the easiest answer is that the community at large decides what is next gen. Yes, there are smaller groups that claim they care more about the power, or others that care more about time frame, etc, etc.

The Wii fell into a similar place as well. The argument was made that it was not part of the same generation as the ps3 and 360, even though it was clearly in the same timeframe and even outsold the other two.

In this case, the WiiU doesn't have the sales numbers to fall back on, but it is still in the same time frame. So they are part of the next generation, but that doesn't mean most of the public will view them that way.
