Software to test/diagnostic computer

Recommended Posts

No boot disk please.. Just something that will test the RAM CPU etc etc ... to see if the computer is running as it should.

For performance, the only thing you can run is benchmarks and look at the scores in comparison to other systems with the same footprints.

The best way to tell if the system hardware is running right is not to use the host operating system because it could be over using the resources or have other issues with it that would not give you a good read. This is why you boot into either a diagnostic mode on a separate partition or you use a boot disk, when testing hardware you really want to do it with a clean, low resource using os.

Agreed with sc302, if you want to know whether your computer is "running as it should", then you need something self-contained and not just run an app on top of Windows--Windows apps don't have the control on the hardware they need to do what you seem to want them to do.

Otherwise, who gets to define what "running as it should" even means?

[EDIT]

Still, it largely depends on what you need.  Would Intel's CPU diagnostics tools serve your purpose?  It does run on Windows...  Try https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=19792
