cosrocket
My sister said her computer was having issues so I want to check it out. The first thing I noticed was that I cannot uninstall any program from Add/Remove Programs. I get a message that says "An error occurred while trying to uninstall the program, it may have already been uninstalled. would you like to remove the program from the programs and Features list?"When I click yes, nothing happens. This is in both Vista and Safe Mode. Then msconfig will not work in normal Vista but does work in Safe Mode. In normal Vista I get the following message: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. Then I cannot install any program in Normal Vista but I can in Safe Mode. In regular Window I get the following message: ShellExecuteEx failed, code 1058. The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.. I try to open services.msc and get the same message, I thought there might be a virus but I ran Norton Internet Security, Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro and no malware was found. I thought for sure some malware would be found but nothing. Does anyone have any idea short of reformatting what i can do to fix some or all of these problems? C:Amie
Sounds like either for reasons of virus or corruption, something has happened to the registry - most likely virus related rather than general corruption. Try rolling back a few days on the System Restore to see if it puts the registry back in one piece for you.
snaphat (Myles Landwehr) Member Posted December 13, 2013 Member Share Posted December 13, 2013 I would try AdwCleaner & TDSSKiller, just to be sure that it isn't some sort of rootkit. It kind of sounds like one to me even if the other's aren't finding anything. It is possible that they are being circumvented somehow also. spaceelf
I've had things like that happen AFTER a virus infection (not those specific things, but close.) Things don't always go back the way they were just cause it's gone. I don't know if it'll fix that problem or if its the greatest thing since sliced bread or not, but this helped me repair the firewall. http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html snaphat (Myles Landwehr) 1 Share

Hello, Have you tried sfc /scannow or chkdsk /r from an elevated Command Prompt window in Safe Mode? You stated that you ran multiple anti-malware programs, and that they did not find any malware. Have you tried TDSSKiller, a rootkit removal utility developed by Kaspersky?
The Evil Overlord
These are the reason I got rid of vista and went back to xp, OP when you try to launch certain programs, do you get the 'windows is searching for blah blah blah.exe' message also? Although I cannot help, this information might prove useful to someone reading this who can.
Decebalvs Rex
Its clearly a virus. You should run a free scan with Malewarebytes and check your drive for errors. If these won't fix it up, try repairing windows.
