Thinking of switching to Android from iOS/Windows Phone

I have been using an HTC One and i love the phone. I used to love AOSP based vanilla roms but Sense has been great.

I am going to throw my hat into the ring and recommend the HTC One. I moved to it from my iPhone4S since Apple decided not to make a proper 5" phone this time around (maybe the 6? who knows) but its a great phone, and you don't have to use BlinkFeed. As another poster said, you can use another loader. So many out there. :)

Though HTC One is a looker, it looses out on spec war with LG G2.

Yup. LG G2 is the phone of the year 2013. :)

Sure S800 is nice but the S600 is no slouch. I have both the N5 and One, and for day to day use, performance is a non issue on the One.

If your on verizon then I always recommend the iphone because it has unlocked GSM and your always able to update the OS.

Can you not always update an Android phone?

HTC One came out in March 2013, LG G2 came out in September 2013.. Of course it's going to lose on the spec war.

You can officially update as long as the manufacturer supports the phone which can be anywhere from 6 months to maybe 1.5 years if you're lucky.

Although, that is where the community really shines as developers create custom roms when the phones are otherwise unsupported. Even Google's first Nexus device released almost 4 years ago, the Nexus One, got a custom rom for Android 4.4.

I must admit i think Sense on my mates HTC One makes stock Android look a bit boring, i loved the original Sense interface on my old Desire.

What's nice about Sense 5.x is that it's very minimal and adds great features at the same time. At least it's not overly bloated like Touchwiz ;) I was also a fan of Sense in the Android 2.x days, mostly because vanilla Android prior to Android 4.0 was quite hideous and lacked serious functionality. But yeah, the HTC One is still a great phone to this day. I hope its successor will be just as good.

Snap, exactly the same reason here! Stock Android before 4.0 was like comparing Windows 95 to Windows 7. I loved HTC Sense then went to on to MIUI. As you say Sense added a lot of nice additions missing from Android at the time.

Touchwiz is disgusting in all honestly, it looked bad in the Android 2.0 days and i honestly think its only got worse over the last few years.

Sadly when your average person thinks Android they think Samsung and believe that's what Android is.

I know a few less technical people at work who hated the Samsung Galaxy (choose phone here), however got a Nexus 5 and have been blown away by it.

What made you switch? My wife wants the Lumia 1020 due to the camera, but she doesn't know if she'll like it if she switches from her iPhone 5.

Thanks for all the backup comments on the HTC One. I will only say this about the LG G2, specs are only specs. I have not used one but maybe it will end up being a crap phone (doubtful but who knows). Like another poster wrote, the HTC One is "older" than the LG so yes its going to lose out spec-wise. Does not make it a bad phone. It runs flawlessly (yes I like BilnkFeed - if only for timekilling) and I actually feel like I have a smartphone now than when I had my iPhone. That being said I was really torn between the HTC One and the Lumia 920 (the 1020 wasn't available here at the time) and would still love to go WP as I slowly rid myself of Apple devices. (ATV3 was recently sold) and with only an iPad3 left to sell the purge is almost complete. (On a side note - the iPad3 does everything I need it to very well so its proving hard to give up plus I need to sell first to offset the cost of a new tablet)

Hello,

The Nexus phones have vanilla Android. You can also try CyanogenMod (which is pretty close to vanilla Android) on your current Android phones, though be aware that installing it may void the warranty.

Sadly, in my view, Cyanogenmod is seperating itself more and more from ASOP ROMs making it less vanilla. Dont get me wrong, Cyanogenmod is great and all, but vanilla Android is a lot better.

1) If you webcam at all, nothing can replace or come close to the quality of Facetime. You will be extremely disappointed with this in Andriod (skype or yahoo or anyother)

2) if you upload to youtube at all, you will also hate android for the extreme uncompressed upload file size. Again IOS is awesome in this regard.

3) if you send messages to other counties, iMessage also tops this category since here (US + Canada) imessage videos (up to max time limit,) counts as a text message to anywhere in the world. This could get pricey, since its considered data if you are sending to someone outside US and Canada.

1) Since when is the quality of the "webcam" determined by the app you use? Phones with good cameras will match or surpass anything on the iOS (doesnt matter if you use Facetime or not)

Also, its called video calling. You ment webcam as in hooking your phone up with USB to your PC and using your phone's camaera as a webcam; Sorry but that can only be done with a 3rd party app in Android, not in iOS.

2) Extreme uncompressed file size? You perfer to upload extreme compressed worst quality videos over extreme umcompressed best quality videos to YouTube? To each his own I guess.

3) First you say it counts as a text message then you say its considered data....Im not sure but isnt iMessage a sort of WhatsApp exclusive for iOS with SMS abilities? If so, I think I rather send WhatsApps/Line/Viber/BBMs/etc for free to anywhere and anyone without thinking what OS they run.

1) call it what will, makes no difference to me, and yes, the app (and encoding) matter... in this case it matters A LOT. :) Try it. Grab a friend with an idevice, and get him to facetime with someone, then switch to another app, hangouts, skype, yahoo, whatever, the others simply just don't compare. Which is odd really, since apple was a late player to the video market.

2) you seem to have seen some kids videos uploaded

3) no matter how you feel, this is still what i said it to be. Go ahead, text a 7 minute FULL SIZE (uncompressed like you said earlier) video to someone in another country... see how much it costs you/them.

Why do you want to buy a 8-9 month old phone like HTC One when HTC One 2 is coming out on Feb-Mar 2013 with same specs as LG G2?

I am using LG G2 since 3 months and it's a big surprise from a company like LG.

What a contradiction!

I didn't say buy it, I was just saying that of course the LG G2 is going to have better specs over the HTC One, it's newer.

Absolutely...compared to the garbage that is known as Touchwiz and LG's overlay.

Not compared to say...stock.  Or Motorola's implementation.

Heck, even go back to when Motorola used their Motoblur, Sense is far more bloated.

Comparing bloat to other bloat doesn't qualify as minimal.  It just means it is lighter bloat.

I got the Nexus 5 on T-Mobile and I LOVE IT!!! I don't use my iPhone at all anymore...the only one that still calls it is my boss ... lol  Dump Verizon they are TERRIBLE and expensive...go with AT&T or T-Mobile for the best all around service and support and price.

I got an Amzer silicone case and the phone still has it's plastic not removed. No slippery slopes. Pure grip.

Thanks. Not a big fan of cases. There is a video/page out there I saw where someone took sand paper and it took away the skin and made it a dull grayish color. So I may try that.

Why would you want to bring down the resale value like that?

Because of that rubberized case, my 3 month phone still looks as new.

See you at xda.
