How often do you reinstall your phone OS?

Recommended Posts

I think today marks the third time this year. Initially running stock, then tried Cyanogenmod 10.1, then went back to stock when JellyBean came out for my phone, then just tonight moved to Cyanogenmod 10.2 stable.

With every new release or general system update (like 8.1). It's just too common for bugs and/or general instability to be introduced in desktops with them.

Then, I ghost it at several different stages: clean install, configured, non-development apps installed and configured, again after interoperations with VMs and other servers have been installed and configured, and then again after my development environment and apps are installed and configured.

I'll revert back to a ghost several times a year for various reasons.

I usually restore on iOS X.0 revisions with the major version bump i.e. iOS 6.1.4 to iOS 7.0 for example. In the case issues come up or I am going to jailbreak, I also tend to restore on .Y revisions of the OS such as 7.0.4 to 7.1.

I used to install nightly builds often but now I am sticking to one unofficial cm 10.1 build and waiting for the unofficial cm11 to stabilize.

For my phone - 3 times this year - only because of something crazy happening to the stock ROM like a bad root, or last time when I locked myself out of my phone hard.  (Forgot my password and had no choice to but to wipe the phone).

For my tablet - none.  Same OS as when they updated it.  So, unless you count that one as a reinstall, never had the need to.

When I had my HeroC - I lost count.   With so many ROM's for it, had a hard time deciding. ;)

Never? Okay that's a lie, I had a bad update once that nictitated a re-flash. Otherwise I haven't done a re-install on functional hardware in.. ever.

I have re-installed WP7.5 a few times on my Focus, but I'm pretty certain its memory is shot, but I kept trying to keep it going. I liked it :)

Every three weeks I update usually ... Kernels I update more often. For new Rom Builds I usually wait to see what bugs are reported and if the update gets mostly praised then ill proceed to update.

On my phone? On my home phone (HTC One), barring system updates, never. Had no need or desire to screw around with custom ROMs, perfectly happy with stock, runs great. My work phone (WP7.5) I've done it twice, once for an update that my carrier never pushed, and once again for a custom ROM that added some tricks, root, etc.

Now my Android based tablets are another story, usually go through quite a few until I find one that's actually stable and I'm happy with, and that's only because they were Android 2.x to begin with.. if they came with 4.x out of the box I wouldn't bother, too many stability issues with CM on my various tablets for my liking.

Whenever there's a new CyanogenMod for  my phone, because that's the only way I can get Android updates. So basically whenever there's a new major Android update. That's when I backup everything, do a factory format, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, reboot, wipe cache, delete batery stats, wipe dalvik cache, wipe dalvik cache, pray to Jesus and flash a new zip. The interim releases (bug fixes) don't require any wiping or clean installs (despite what delusional XDA people might tell you), so I don't reinstall with those and just do a normal update. Basically, twice a year.
