I may be able to get a Supermicro 933 3U server on the cheap, which comes fitted with an Opteron / DDR2 / SATA-300 RAID card, the case in question has x15 swap drive bays. My question is, would it be possible to modernize this server? Fit a modern ATX mobo with an Intel CPU etc.
In its current state, it can only support up to 500GB drives @ SATA-300 speeds. Would the drive size limitation be tied to the old RAID card? And fitting a newer motherboard with a newer RAID card allow for say 2TB drives? Or is the backplane board behind the hot swap bays also a problem?
I don't mind if I'll be stuck with the slower SATA speeds, as it's going to be used for home storage.
TL;DR - Would a Supermicro 933 server support 2TB HDD's if it was modernized with newer components like mobo / CPU / RAID card?
