Since some months I run into trouble with my mouse cursor; it doesn't respond when booting (and restarting) every now and than. I use this notebook on a daily basis for mostly office work, some Adobe Photoshop Elements. I basically is constantly on (except in some weekends). Can it be that my hardware/mobo is wearing out? If the problem still occurs, replace the touchpad (which may be an integrated part containing the keyboard). The service manual for your notebook should give specific information on parts (as might looking around eBay a bit). kiddingguy Posted December 21, 2013 Author Share Posted December 21, 2013 (edited) I have an external Logitech mouse. Both external mouse and trackpad either freeze or go blank and show no cursor. Can it be hardware/OS related? The notebook came preinstalled with Windows 7 and I upgraded to Windows 8.1 (clean install btw). The strange thing is, that the external mouse (only connected via USB) also faces this issue of freezing. So in that way is it unlikely it has something to do with internal hardware/mobo. Or am I mistaken here? Booting/restarting into Windows gives this issue, so I am thinking more of driver related issues. But than again, it's strange that in some cases no cursor at all is showing & both trackpad and external mouse cannot are not working. danny62381 Posted December 21, 2013 Share Posted December 21, 2013 Just depends on the kind of notebook. Most any "retail" notebook found at BestBuy or Wal-Mart these days are complete junk. Matter of fact they make them to where if something goes wrong you can barely service them. Take a look at the Commercial grade and business models, such as Dell Latitude notebooks, or Lenovo Thinkpads... These units are made of better components, and are very reliable. It happens with and without the external mouse connected (also with or without Logitech's software installed). When I clean installed my Windows it happened during bootup (this might be maybe because no touch pad drivers were installed) So basically I have no idea what might be the issue here.... You may wish to contact Asus and see if they will repair it. Failing that, or, if an out-of-warranty repair is too expensive, use your favorite search engine to see if you can locate the service manual for your notebook and a replacement touchpad to install. Are you absolutely certain that the freezing is limited to your pointing device, i.e. if you're frozen with Notepad in focus, you're able to enter text even though the mouse pointer doesn't respond? winrez Posted December 23, 2013 Share Posted December 23, 2013 I would try plugging in the mouse to a different USB port (maybe on the other side of the laptop) also, I would do a system restore to when it worked last to see if it is a Windows driver issue and lastly I would check for BIOS updates from ASUS. kiddingguy Posted December 23, 2013 Author Share Posted December 23, 2013 Thx for the replies. The mouse/touchpad freezes. Also the keyboard cannot be used. A complete "freeze down" of my notebook. So as zhangm says, it might be a bit more thourough than 'expected'.... I already had my SSD replaced and clean installed afterwards, but this issues persists. Checked eventvwr.msc for write errors immediately after a freeze? If you're running two sticks of RAM, try removing one stick and running for a few days, then the other. This is definitely sounding like a hardware issue where you've ruled out HIDs and the hard drive itself.
