Finally figured out what's crashing Media Center x64 in Win 8.1 immediately whenever attempting to play back recorded TV or attempting to play live TV.

This happens (for me) whenever I've used Modern IE and it is suspended. Ending the suspended task results in being able to re-launch (without rebooting) Media Center and playing back recordings and live TV as expected.

Not sure what the actual cause is, but that's the solution in my case.

Good catch!!!  I was wondering why I was having this same problem.  For me it would crash the moment I even went into the guide.
