What air passengers hate

Recommended Posts

So you are more important than travelling families? Force them to be put out, so you can get some shut eye. Give me a break, a flight is a flight. It's scheduled at night because there is demand for it.

If a family with a kid have to travel at night, big deal. The world doesn't revolve around you.

I am not more important than travelling families, but neither are they more important than me. Parents need to prepare their children for travel, make sure that they are amused and fed during the flight as well as discipline their little darlings beforehand. While they may be going on a nice holiday, it does not mean that I am. If I need to get some sleep or some work done, they should respect that.

Unfortunately, children don't just come with an off switch. It would be great if they do but they don't and you need to just accept that they'll be loud from time to time. It doesn't automatically mean that the parents aren't doing their best to maintain quiet. Children can be annoying but so can people doing business on public transport.

Overnight flights are overnight flights. Airlines except people to get rest and that why they turn off almost all the lights. Just because you can't control your child and don't let at least 75% of people around you to sleep is your damn problem.

When I was young, one of my mates worked in a small airline(owned by Miles Copeland no less), anyway, he got myself and another bloke free return tickets on a flight, and we did a "Rose Street in Edinburgh pub crawl" for the afternoon.., jeepers, were we the most hated passengers on the return flight... :D

  Funniest thing I have read all day - clearly you don't have kids either.

We've booked to go to Florida next year, and I am a little anxious when it comes to the flight. 8 hours there, and 9 hours back. My son has Asperger's and will, no doubt, annoy some of the passengers, we will just have to do our best to control his behaviour, but for those who expect kids to be 100% well behaved, especially when cooped up, then tough, if they don't want to travel with the rest of us, then book first class - problem solved.

Or maybe you don't have parenting skills..

I possibly don't - I can only try.

I do, however, realise there is no such thing as controlling your kids.  That running around and making noise is what kids do, that they should be encouraged to do so.  And anyone else can 'jump', because they will only get a chance to be young once.

I used to be a real 'they need to control their kids' type of person before too... then I had one, and I totally understand and will completely put up with it.

I don't know if you have children, but if you don't, your view may well change if/when you do.

I understand that "running around and making noise is what kids do" but not when 90% on a plane trying to sleep.

But you don't understand.  I don't like taking my daughter on a flight, it's as horrible an experience for her as it is for those that she disturbs being cooped up for such a period of time.  We take the flight that is most convenient to us (usually economically as you have to pay for a 2 year old to fly - not like she gets to fly for free) and believe it or not, we don't choose the flight that we think will inconvenience the most people we can.

Maybe one day you will understand.

Air travel is a different type of transportation. It's unlike any other category of public transport. And I don't need to accept that they will be loud. I can get noise-cancelling headphones, I can walk up to the parents and have a firm but quiet word with them. If parents know their kids are likely to be a nuisance, they should sit at the back of the cabin to minimise inconvenience to most people.

And yet there is a parents who can keep their children quite and I've see more than enough for them on a airplanes. I better go talk to a wall because talking to you is no use. You are king of a universe and everybody should kiss your feet. And don't give out excuses as "you don't understand" bs.

Nice attitude - hope it gets you far in life.

Like I said, it's quite possible that I lack the parenting skills - I will quite happily admit that as I have never claimed to be a good parent.

It's also possible that they are children, don't know any better and need people like you to cut them some slack. Shame you won't admit to that.

I fly regularly, in economy, business and BA first.  With regular flying comes the realisation that regardless of class, we're all stuck up at 35000ft in a big aluminium tube and have to get along.  If you're of the mindset that children should be seen and not heard, then you're clearly living not living in the real world.  Children by their very nature scream and cry so invest in some good noise cancelling headphones and get on with it.

Simple.

If you think his attitude sucks imagine the attitude of a single passenger rudely disrupting a hundred other passengers' peace, quiet, and sanity by accompanying a child on a flight that he/she KNOWS will be bouncing around, causing a disruption.   Now THAT attitude sucks!!

Yes - that's why I do it. Just to annoy 100 other people I don't know so they will hate me. And I have to pay for that privilege.

Think about this for just a minute and you'll realise just how silly your statement is.

You clearly don't have children either.

Perhaps parents of such kids would like to contribute to my purchase in that case. I'm not holding my breath though.

Clearly you are wrong....I do.

And I also know my child is capable of sitting still and behaving up to two hours on a plane.  I know this because I parent.  I also know how long the flight is.  I also know that If I need to travel more than a two hour flight distance away with my child that there are other modes of transportation in this world that not only save the sanity of other passengers, but also my sanity.  My child in a car ride can sit still and behave 4-5 hours at a time. So I drive the longer trips.

Unless you're flying over an ocean, you have plenty of options.  YOU just decide to take the quickest, convenient mode of transportation.

Why would I take a flight if I am not going over an ocean?

You've really lost me here

Parents sit at the front because that's where the bulkheads are and the bassinets attach to them. Parents also have more stuff so they can do their best to meet their children's needs and that requires a bit more space. The front of the plane is also the least noisy/turbulent so young kids will face less disruption.

Perhaps you should consider sitting at the back where you're less likely to be disturbed. I understand that children can be a nuisance in public but that's life. Get over it. You were a child once and no doubt plenty of people thought you were annoying as well. If you ever have children you'll understand.

I'd be happy to contribute when I get the same funding from obnoxious whining adults on the same flight.

People have every right to complain when someone else's kids are being a PITA. Irrespective of cabin class, passengers have a reasonable expectation of a calm and peaceful flight. During my years of frequent flying, more often than not it's the kids and their parents who are the problem, not other adults.

I prefer to sit as close to the front as possible for a number of reasons: I can get to my seat sooner when I board, I can get off the plane sooner when I disembark, it is quieter, meal/drinks service reaches me sooner, etc. You didn't know me or people around me when I was a child, so your comment me being annoying holds no water.

It really gets on my wick when people say "if you have kids you'll understand". It's as if kids and their parents are immune to criticism for their actions. They are not. When I have kids, I will make sure they are not a nuisance to other passengers, because I have walked and continue to walk many a mile in their shoes. Some parents clearly do a good job of keeping their kids seen and not heard, while others let them roam free up and down the aisles disturbing the peace of other passengers. Some people are happy to put up with that, I am not one of those people.

I used to say that. The statement assumes a level of control over the little people that couldn't be further detached from reality.

Sorry! I don't mean to sound condescending but I've walked many a mile in both sets of shoes.

As Fahim said above it's easier said than done. For instance, there's not a lot you can do to prevent a teething child cry except give them calpol and hope for the best. Children will often cry or whine because it's the only way they can communicate, not because they want to annoy other passengers. Like adults children have a right to move about the plane and you'll probably find that the alternative is a crying child who doesn't want to be stuck in a chair. That's not necessarily bad parenting, just human nature. Parents don't want to be on a flight with a difficult child any more than you do - it's exhausting and embarrassing and more demanding for them than you.

You're deliberately sitting in the part of the plane dedicated to children and then complaining that they're disrupting you. You have options that aren't available to travelling parents but refuse to take advantage off them. At the end of the day, your needs aren't greater than anyone elses so you can either upgrade, sit down the back or choose a flight at a different time and hope that you won't be kept awake by kids.

Be that as it may. Only time will paint a true picture. At the very least, I will have control over which flight we take, so I will do my damnest to avoid red eye ones.
