Clean Start Menu

Recommended Posts

I am looking for the best way to clean and organize the start menu (Windows 8.1, StartisBack).

I have been for awhile, right clicking and using Open and Open All Users, which is weird to begin with, and when I do this, sometimes things don't get removed even though I deleted it, or things come back.

What is the best way to organize, delete and change the Start Menu?

When you ask the best way, then it would be install win7 but if you want to stick with win 8 without metro crap then try installing StartIsBack. I use it personally and it works very well.

Do you even read the OP questions?

I stated, I use StartisBack, and looking to clean up the start menu from that. Geez.

I don't understand what do you mean by cleaning start menu. If you are using startisback, then did you try right clicking on menu and going to properties and change configuration from there.

I am talking about adding folders, removing apps, removing system folders that are within that Start Menu.

Everytime I do it, by "Open All Users" etc, it can sometimes cause issues, as stated in the original POST.

Just wondering if there is a more proper way of doing it.

Can you right click 'open file location' for files and folders in the start menu provided by startisback? Just wondering it is possible to organize it generically using explorer.

There is no "best" way, afaik. You just have to manually edit the folders/shortcuts to your personal liking, the way you seem to have been doing already.

Some shortcuts are in your user folder, others in the all users folder (because some programs are available to all users, and others only to you).

I have noticed items coming back after I have moved/deleted them, maybe the application that created them is doing that? Don't know, but they will stick eventually if you keep poking them.

It's a pain in the arse getting it nice and tidy, but it's worth it.

Yes,

But part of the question was why the issues? Like, sometimes a program I removed will show up again, or a system folder will return (not after updates, just randomly).

Or I will right click and delete something, and either an error comes up saying can't, or it deletes, but nothing actually happens?

It's the price you pay for insisting on using an app that is essentially a dirty hack

All of that just sounded like application defects to me. My suggestion was an attempt as a workaround for those issues until they are sorted out by the developers :-)

Windows 7 has the same behaviour.

Wow, are you serious? I've never actually bothered manually playing with the start menu (read as: organizing it). It does seem plausible given that startisback is probably just using the original file structure provided by Windows to display its start menu.

Not sure where he pulled that out of, I used to caste about my menus till I lost interest in needing with it, and even on Win 7 it kept my changes and never did anything close to this, it's one of the reasons I like the start screen, I can pub only what I want to see and the rest are easily accessible if needed

I pulled it from first hand experience. If I recall, it would only happen with one or two apps, like winrar or something, that's why I said before, maybe its the application that created the shortcut, that is undoing his edits.
