jv16 PowerTools as open source software?

 

jv16 PowerTools is one of the most popular Windows utility suites with a history going back to the late 1990?s and with millions of downloads under its belt.

In the latest user survey carried out in June, over 87% of people rated the software excellent by giving it full 5 points! Same survey was also used to ask about the idea of converting the software to open source. The majority of our users, both paying customers and trial version users, said that going open source would not only be a good idea but they would be willing to participate financially to make it happen.

Now it is the time to make it happen!

This makes no sense. They need donations and fundraising for a product that already exists and that they already have source code for into open source software? :rolleyes:

 

Sounds simply like a money grabbing ploy to me. They probably calculated via cost/benefit analysis that they weren't making much money off of the product anymore and then dreamed up this scheme as a last ditch effort to make money through donations and fundraising under the feel-good guise that one was contributing to opensourcing the software...

It is a ploy to milk it's customers. They know the software is garbage, so they decided to try this trick.

My concern is that it will generate many fake system "booster/tweaker/fixer" utilities of dubious quality that report all sorts of problems where not actually exists (what anti-malware software often refers to as a potentially unwanted application).

100k? Wow, they must think people are stupid... oh wait.

I stopped using this kind of utilities when Vista came out. They do more harm than good, specially registry cleaning and file deleting.

 

That they are asking $100,000 to to go open source is unbelievable. I guess their goal is to make fast money and call it quits on their aging, and now pretty much unneeded software.
