iPad Mini screen cracked by itself?

Yes, but it is known that flaws in this type of glass can lead to this type of fracture, wich is what happened to a whole range of iPhones. Unlike normal tempered glass, this doesn't shatter on a fault as it isn't that stressed.

My sister has had this iPad Mini (Non-retina) for about 2 months now, and she's just contacted me this evening saying that she left the room for about 20 seconds after using it only to come back to this:

 

Hasn't been dropped, I think she only ever uses it on the sofa. Bizarre, anyone else had this happen before? I think she bought it from Amazon, do you think the guys at the Apple store would accept this as a faulty screen or simply accuse her of dropping it? The damage appears to be focussed around the sides of the home button... :/

 

She has no idea what to do, I've recommended taking it to the Apple store, but eugh- great time for this to happen eh?

 

Yes it is possible that it cracked by itself. It's called stress fracture.

The glass was probably too tight in that area when it was manufactured and now it just cracked after a couple of months of stress.

<--- My avatar is a close up picture of a NASTY scratch I had in my iPad 2.  I suspect some sand got between the screen and the smart cover.  Perhaps pressed together or festered in some way judging by the pattern..

 

I took it to an Apple Store, and they totally replaced it with very little questions asked.

 

On my iPad 3 I have a much smaller (and less noticeable scratch) and I tried the same thing.  They wouldn't replace the iPad 3, but they would sell me a refurbished iPad 3 for $299 at the time (it was still the newest iPad). 

 

Try your luck with the Apple Store.  If you don't know what happened, just say that you don't know.  Don't speculate to some thermal stress issue.  Have her just explain what she knows about it and they might do her a 1up and give her a warrantied refurb as replacement.  Don't do this over the phone though..take it to the nearest Apple Store if it at all possible.  The Apple Store nearest me is a little over an hour drive, so I know it can suck :(.  Previous to that one opening, the nearest town that had one was a 4 hour drive.
