Nexus 5 or Note 3

21 posts in this topic

I currently have the Nexus 5 and traded my other Nexus 5 that I had for a Note 3. Now I have a dilemma. Do I keep my current Nexus 5 and so the Note 3 or do I sell the Nexus 5 and keep the Note 3? I think if I kept the Note 3 then there would be no reason to keep my iPad Mini.

I love the Nexus 5, but the Note 3 is actually pretty nice. Now, I did buy the Note 2 and hated it for the battery life and size.

It depends. If you want that big screen and long battery life go with the Note 3, but beware of Touchwiz and long waits for software updates (may be even longer depending on your carrier). If you want pure Android and want the latest and greatest version of it to be delivered to you as soon as possible, go with the Nexus 5 but speaker quality and camera might not be as good as the Note 3.

I've noticed some lag with the Note 3, could it be touch wiz? Right now I like it, but I'm wanting to pay on the Nexus 5.

The screen size is big, which holding it in my hand is cramping it up a little and I have big hands.

Decisions decisions.

Is touch wiz the ROM?

The lag is coming from Touchwiz, which is actually a user interface/launcher  which you can't remove unless you go and root your phone and install a custom ROM.

Can you tell me your reason?

OkY, if I kept it if most likely put CM11 on it.

both are really good phones. I'd personally keep the Note3 and drop CM on it, that thing will fly.

Yeah, I could do that. I'm still debating and for some reason the Nexus 5 is winning in my eyes.

As a SG4 owner, I would personally stay away from anything touchwiz related. If you do decide to go samsung, root that mother and get rid of touch wiz.

Nexus 5 for the sole reason that you will get updates quickly and won't have to bother with rooting and flashing a buggy ROM on it.

And imo, the Note 3 looks stupid with that fake leather crap on the back.  Samsung just doesn't seem to put emphasis on build quality.

yeah the faux leather is really nasty.

Also +1 on the update thing. Samsung is really bad for updating to the latest android, but I guess that goes for any other brand using android (with custom skin on top).

Off topic but slightly related: You'd think, beta builds are available so manufacturers like HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony etc. Have a go at it and make final update time less, but it seems this is a little bit too much to ask. I know frequent updates aren't a major selling point for everyone, but you gotta give apple some credit, when an update goes live, it goes for all the compatible devices. Android should set rules like "max 2 month wait for update" as a way to ensure consumers get the latest and greatest" meh... /rant

Yeah I'm not enjoying this Touchwiz. I did root and add CM11 to my Nexus 5.

I don't know what CM11 gave me though, lol. Still new to Android.

This thread is incomplete without LG G2 recommendation.

You're running a nightly verison of CM 11,which runs Android 4.4 so it isn't that stable so maybe you should get a more stable version of CM. BTW, CM makes your phone run faster and better and has more options for you to customise your device.

I can't use ART though, and before I traded the Nexus 5, the guy turned it on and you can obviously see how much smoother it was compared to it being off.

Get the Nexus 5 and keep your iPad, that's the best combination I think...apps from both worlds on two killer devices =)

That's what I'm doing now but the more I use my Nexus 5 then going to the iPad Mini the more I'm bored with it.

I'm running the nightlies and haven't had a single issue really. Of course there's a much more elevated risk of a bug, especially with nightlies, but CM for Nexus devices is usually fairly solid.

Why?

So restricted, granted I don't know what you can do on a Nexus 7 tablet.
