Looking for a new GPS unit for car (no smartphones please)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Im looking for a GPS unit for my car. The current TomTom I have is great but is outdated and its screen is...resistive.

I need to put it on the windshield, lifetime updates (Garmin has a line model for that), voice navigation (to change course, set a new route, etc), and a SD card (Im really lazy like that so I perfer just using a SD card to update it :p )

I dont tend to travel but I dont want to lose myself in nearby European countries either.

And of course, the cheaper, the better (100-150 euro range) :)

Shouldnt be touching the screen whilst driving

Lots of different models, prices and onboard facilitys for Tom Tom devices so Id say go for a lower end model if you use it infrequently. They are in the UK at least, giving away lifetime maps for certain models till 31 Decemeber maybe you can pick one up locally with a similar deal

Hello,

Type of map >> navigator model. Teleatlas covers some countries horribly, same for Navteq.

I think each GPS company works with ONE type of map only so...

Obviously I dont and one of the many reasons I want voice commands :)

I know how to use Google :p When I made this thread, I had in mind that someone commented "I have the TomTom 340. Works great" or "I had the TomTom 980. Very slow!" Thats what I ment this thread to be about :)

Then you get Garmin GPS.... it has everything you want in it..  such as voice commands, text/call via Bluetooth, unlimited maps updates, etc.

Look at the link I gave you... you pick it out based on your budget..

If you do not want traffic, then you can turn it off in the settings.

  • 2 weeks later...

Look at the Garmin and get ANY model based on your needs, and cost. Used almost all the stand alone GPS's in my travels and Garmin was by far the best choice. Still using Garmin after 5 years, updated 2 times for better features. Now I have voice, and free maps.

Hello,

Very complete just missing voice navigation :(

I don't get what you mean?

http://www.gpscity.com/compare/nuvi2557lmt

Check there or below:

http://gpstracklog.com/2013/04/garmin-nuvi-2557lmt-review.html

It speaks out voice navigation just fine. Dumb Squad just labeled it wrong when they say "Text to Speech = Not Checked" thing on that site.

  • 5? screen
  • Lifetime maps and traffic
  • Traffic announcements
  • Active lane guidance
  • Up ahead feature
  • Customization options

-----------

EDIT - Do you mean voice command? If so the 2597 has that along with Bluetooth.

It doesn't matter; if you have unlimited funds the pick the best. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to pick out the best Garmin, for the budget you have. Be careful of where you buy it and make SURE you find out the return policy. Some places charge a restocking fee., and some don't. My suggestion is to check out Costco or Sam's club as both of those have the absolute best return policy, that is if they handle the one your interested in, and there is one near you. Both of those are online.
