devnulllore
Hi, I own a, albeit slightly older, Dolby 5.1 Surround system. It consists basically of the 5 speakers a woofer and a small decoder box. I have been looking to upgrade however every "home theater" system I have seen comes with either a DVD or Blu-Ray player, which I don't need. The other solution seems to be buying a surround receiver and trying to find the speakers seperately, which I can't seem to find. What would be the best way to upgrade. Are there systems that consist of just a reciever and speakers without a player or do I need to buy the components seperately? Thanks,
compl3x
What is your budget? If you don't need a Blu-Ray or DVD player I suppose your only choice is to buy a receiver and speakers separately. Home Theaters in a box almost always come as Blu-Ray/DVD players. Why can't you find receivers and speakers?
Sir Topham Hatt
Or buy the set then flog the Bluray player to get a little money back?
Lord Method Man
Here are some: Nevermind, silly me thinking I could paste a URL in Neowin  Just do a search for Onkyo Home Theater Systems. They sell Receiver + Speakers/Sub combos. Keep in mind most combos like this will be entry-level and not have a lot of room for expansions or upgrades. Ericko
Are there systems that consist of just a reciever and speakers without a player? Sony used to have those, I bought one a couple of years ago, but now I can't find any.
Barney T. Administrators Posted December 28, 2013 Administrators Share Posted December 28, 2013 Nevermind, silly me thinking I could paste a URL in Neowin  There is nothing wrong with posting a URL here. As long as you are not a spammer or spamming sites, all is good.

123456789A
I can't paste anything into the text editor. Same here. It's an IE11 compatibility issue. I have to use Firefox to post some things on Neowin, which is frustrating.

Jeston Veteran Posted December 28, 2013 Veteran Share Posted December 28, 2013 Without knowing your budget, it's hard to recommend something. However, my personal preferences are an Onkyo receiver (at least 1000 series) and Klipsch speakers (something like the RF-62 II or RF-82 II system). My personal setup consists of: Onkyo 3009 Receiver Klipsch RF-82 II speakers HSU Research VTF-15H subwoofer
spikey_richie
Best bet it to sell what you have on Gumtree or eBay and get some seperates. You'll never look back, there's so much flexibility. I'm currently rocking a Sony STR-DN1000 receiver, and a 5.1 Onkyo speaker set similar to this one. I chose the receiver as it matches the piano black finish of the Sony Blu-Ray player, plus it's 7.1 and quite meaty so will last me some years to come. I've had it for... 4 years now I think and it hasn't skipped a beat. As for the speakers, a nice powerful powered active sub is a must in any x.1/2system. I previously owned a second hand Onkyo hifi system which was great so knew the build quality would be there as well as the sound quality. Plus my Dad's mate is a distributor of theres :p They're wired up using some OFC rather than the cheap stuff they come with. Speaker cable can be quite expensive, but if you're transmitting over a reasonable distance then I'd invest in some decent wire.
SierraSonic
I'm personally looking to get the Klipsch HD300, HD500, or the Klipsch HD600 systems. http://www.klipsch.com/hd-theater
+Fahim S. MVC Posted December 28, 2013 MVC Share Posted December 28, 2013 As has been said above, there are lots of options available depending on what you want to spend. The cheapest I could find was the Onkyo HTS3505 which runs at $299 at Amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3500-5-1-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B0077V88V8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388269081&sr=8-1&keywords=Onkyo+HTS3505
Aergan
Yamaha receivers are great if you're on a budget - many to be had on ebay as well if you're looking to save money for speakers.
