Broadband Connection Drops Out

Recommended Posts

Hi,

On the W7 dell PC here The connection regularly drops out after about twenty minutes online,

The PPP indicator led goes blank, indicating to me that the probem may be isp/line/ or router

This can occurr spontaneaeously but usually happens if I try a search in google or bing, the page will hang, then the PPP led on the router goes out, and the connection is gone.

It can happen sometimes when I log in to sites as well,

For instance, sometimes if I'm logged out here, and my previous login details are deleted with crapcleaner, Once I've completed the user and pass form, the connection drops,

It's not everytime though,

This has been going on for a couple of years, but it seems to be happen everyday now, (three cut outs this morning already)

I put it to my isp that some malicious user maybe injecting some code to disrupt my service,  and they laughed. However in the last three years some really nasty stuff has happened with online identity theft, death threats, physical assaults and attempted murder,  so I leave that possibilty open that a malicious user is causing the issue,

Im also open to the router "Bilion 5200 G" being faulty, and open to the isp "Talk Talk business" being poor service.

So I'm thinking about a new router now, but should I waste some cash on that and still be hacked by a nasty user, or let down by a sub standard broadband service

Thanks Myles, no I dont have access to anther modem. Just after I posted, the connection dropped again, I called the ISP, and they gave me another number to call, and well, the connection was up and down like a french maids drawers, finally cuttting out until this morning, I see its back up, I took the opportunity to order some new equipment, but it wont arrive until the weekend,

Whilst i was on the phone to the ISP, the tech said; "your connection is "up" at our end", but the PPP light on the modem was out, and no data was flowing. So, I aggree with you Myles, it prolly is the modem which is faulty, but I think i should ask the ISP to change my account/broadband password for security purposes,

Anyway, looks like a few more days before I can put it to bed...

  • 3 weeks later...

OK, I've had a new router for a couple of weeks now, and guess what, No drop outs,  New Hardware solved the issue. Along with the new router, I loaded up AVG Security business edition, guess what, it found a trojan in my cracked Google earth pro.damn...

Backed up files, reformated and fresh installed new Windows.

thanks.

There is still evidence of an intrusion though, I cant reveal the details in an open forum.

Could mark the dropped connection issue solved.

I hear you John, the intrusion is not related to the GE Pro , The google earth was only installed in 10/13, the intrusion It dates back to when I first started getting connection dropouts, two years ago, and it came in through an email.

I cant say more than that.

D'you think I should ask my isp for some new connection and password settings?

Hmm if you've done a clean install it should be clean. Must have been a worm or something if it came in an email? And if it was a worm (that affects removable drives like flash drives), you may still have a flash drive thats infected? If you're using one

Is the firmware on the modem up to date?

But, HOW do you you know there's an intrusion?

As I say, I have evidence, but I cant say, as the malicious party may be reading here. I do believe it's at a corporate level though. I was "befriended" on a mental health forum by a covert user. I cant say more than that. Yes, I'll have to go and do some firmware checking...

Well like I said If you did a clean install you should be clean

Thanks :)

This sounds kind of like a conspiracy novel being built up ;-)

I know, bizzare isnt it. :D

Thats the fimware sorted, I thought I'd blown it, as the connection was dead after the firmware upgrade, but a quick check revealed the firmware had reset the adsl name and pass. sorted now :)
