Cool Tasker Tasks?

Recommended Posts

Afternoon all,

So I'm starting to play around with the app Tasker. It seems pretty nifty, and certainly adds a whole new level of automation to my phone. The only issue I have at the moment is that I don't know what I would want automating!

So far I have started with the most basic of tasks, so that when I am within range of my home wifi it will change my wallpaper. As I'm at the office right now I have yet to see if I've been able to create the task correctly, but already I'm trying to think of other, more practical applications.

And so I have come here to ask, what awesome things have you set Tasker up to do? As I write this post I'm trying to set it up so that when I'm at home it will disable my security PIN on the screenlock, but I'm also interested in hearing things that don't involve being in a location. If you guys have any thoughts I would love to hear them. And as I'm a beginner with this app, providing steps on how you achieved your task would be appreciated.

Hmm, I've just seen that you can't seem to select a live wallpaper to be set when you plug your phone in to charge. Or rather, you can but only if you set up the task to run like you were selecting the wallpaper yourself, which is a bit fiddly this early on in using the app. The only other thing I could think of would be to set a live wallpaper as the default wallpaper, then invert the rule so that when the phone is not charging it switches to a static picture. But I don't know if that would work, I'll have to try it.

I'm also going to look in to temporarily enabling the GPS when I enter an app like Google Maps or Ingress, but I've hit a snag because I'm running Android 4.3 so I need to find the option under the Secure Settings plugin.

EDIT: Damn, it didn't work. It switched to the static wallpaper when I unplugged it, but it didn't go back to the live wallpaper when I plugged it back in. Instead it went for the default wallpaper. Oh well, maybe I'll look in to the fiddly option in a bit. :(

Something else that I've noticed is that using Tasker to set a wallpaper, there doesn't seem to be a way that you can tell it which section of the picture to set as the wallpaper, it will just center the picture. Any way to change that, or will I have to manually crop any pictures that I would like to set?

I use Tasker to Enable/Disable GPS just like you described for Google Maps, Ingress (Go Enlightened!), and a couple other GPS enabled apps. I am running a customer ROM of 4.4.2 on my Bell S4. I use a different app, Secure Settings, that integrates with Tasker to perform this function. I just can't be 100% off the top of my head if that requires Root access or not. Task sets the Location service to Mode to High Accuracy when app is opened and back to Battery Saver when the app is closed.

Other tasks I have setup so far is one where I shake the phone to toggle TelsaLED on or off, one that opens Google Music when I plug in my head phones and on to put my phone on Silence during working hours.

Ah, another reply! :)

I've got hold of secure settings, and I'm still working with it to disable my PIN lock when I'm in the appartment.

I also set up a rule last night that says when I'm within 100m of a particular location (my office) my phone will automatically switch to silent. I tested it this morning and it works perfectly. :D

Have you got any other plugins you can think of that would add functionality? I can't think what functionality I would like at the second, but any and all suggestions are welcome.

I've downloaded AutoVoice as well, just haven't setup anything with it yet. I've been watching different tutorials on YouTube for ideas and also follow the Tasker community on Google+. I'm coming to realize a lot of the really cool things require Root, which I already have, but I know there are a lot of people who can't take advantage of that or are unwilling to.

Once I play some more with it I will have to post what I come up with. I had tried like you did with the disable lock but it for some reason was causing my widgets to not auto update when I turned the screen on with that profile active. May look into it again at one point but the basics of it was when I was connected to my home WiFi it disabled the lock screen, again I believe through Secure Settings.

I hope it's okay to revive a semi-old thread. :)

I have Tasker doing a lot of things on my phone combined with NFC.

When away from my home WiFi, Work WiFi (which is in a very small radius, in the basement I work in which loses it's signal after going upstairs), Parent's WiFi or whatever else there is - that I set up, It locks my phone with a secure password when I am away from those.  When I go back to them, it disables the password lock.

I also have a similar task, but to disable the password on command.  I combine this with Trigger to execute the Tasker task to disable the password.  This let's me at any time disable the password when I need to.

I created a scene in Tasker to launch a speedometer app, navigation app, Mileage Logger (for work), and an Exit button.  This is also triggered by a NFC tag embedded in my car's dock.

When I connect to a charger, I have Tasker keep the screen on so I can run any app w/o having to turn the display on (Things like music apps, or desk clocks).

Upon Disconnecting from the charger, Tasker kills apps that I have designated.  So, if I am listening to music, it will kill that app.  Also, kills the speedometer app, navigation app and mileage logger as I keep my phone plugged in to a charger in my car.

I have also set up tasker in the past (but not using it at the moment), to wake up my PC when I enter my WiFi zone.  (Since I have upgraded to a SSD, my boot time is no longer than 3 seconds so not really needing a WOL event).

I know there are plenty of things to do with Tasker, but these are what I use on a regular basis. :)
