Windows 7 abruptly shuts down when resuming sleep/hybernation

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I've had a weird issue on an HP dv6-3216us laptop that I bought from a friend that I just can't figure out.  Everytime I try to wake this laptop from it's sleep/hybernation mode by pressing any key or moving the mouse, the laptops fan spins up as if it's waking up, then the power abruptly shuts off.  I have to manually press the power button to bring the power back and then I'm presented with a message about Windows 7 was not shut off correctly and do I want to boot or go into Startup Repair.

I've confirmed that this happens every time.  As part of my diagnostics, I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7 and only installed the HP dv6 drivers, nothing else.  That did not solve it.  So I reformatted again and installed one driver at a time starting with the Intel Chipset Software, until I got the issue to happen.  The second driver I installed was the Intel Core HD Graphics Driver and immediately the laptop would go into sleep mode and shut down when waking.  I used both the version of the graphics driver found on HP's website and the one found on the Intel site.  No change.

As a side note, I've tested the memory with memtest86 and it passes all tests.  The hard drive is brand new and passes all manufacturer diagnostics.  It's not even connected to the internet as ethernet and wifi drivers aren't installed yet.

Does anyone have any idea on what in the world is going on?

Marshall - I edited the post as I hit enter and posted it prematurely.  Anyway, I have adjusted the power plans, but short of disabling hybernation/sleep that doesn't help.

So, by process of elimination you've found the culprit, the display driver. I'd assume you're using version 8.15.10.2189? Perhaps try downgrading to ver. 8.77xxxx?

Edit: I just saw you tried "both" drivers listed on the website, I'm assuming you mean the two I posted above.

With that said, how about an update to 15.31.3.64.3071?

Marshall - I can't be sure if it's the graphics driver for sure or if the root cause is more in the BIOS.  I've read both are possible culprits for this issue.  Driver wise, I've tested both versions of 8.15.10.2827 and 8.15.10.2993.  I've looked for older versions of graphics cards, but haven't been able to find any.

Unfortunately the link you provided was for a slightly different graphics card.  The "Intel HD Graphics 4000/2500" are different than what my notebook has which is the earlier "Intel HD Graphics".
