New PS4 firmware update this month?

Recommended Posts

I made a topic on GAF about the PS4 FW lacking some basic things, most notably Pulse headset support - http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=744019&highlight=

Was "politely" pointed out to me apparently the Pulse support was coming in Jan 2014. Pretty sure I had never read a confirmation, or had just forgot, but anyway I hope it's out this month in a reasonable time frame. Nothing worse than ETA Jan, and it launches on the 31st.

A nice fast but criminally lacking in functionality OS. I'm eagerly awaiting decent audio options again like on the PS3 (issues with PS4 Netlix app right now), and also DLNA. Now that UMS can completely bypass cinavia I really want to just move to the PS4 for streaming due to the OS being much faster.

I know most won't care for this request, but the biggest thing bugging me right now is having to re-enter my password all the time for account management. I know that safety comes first and obviously Sony know better than most on that subject, but even if they let us use the passcode instead it would be a huge improvement.

Other than that I've been pretty happy with the OS. Some stuff needs to be rearranged IMO to look nicer; I'm not a fan of the huge cover art on the store for example.

When the reviews were coming out the OS looked like a complete mess to use but it's actually really straight forward, and best of all, responsive! Looking forward to new features :)

Yeah some basic UI customization is needed, wallpapers/themes especially. The speed between going from a game back to the main menu is mostly what I mean/enjoy by calling it fast. Pausing/resuming has to be fast, no compromises.

Thankfully the store loads a bit better as well, the performance of the store on the PS3 sucks.

I wouldn't bet on a password save option, they never introduced it to the PS3 :( I think it's probably going to be filed under "security" to stop people who are visiting your house being able to make any serious changes without knowing the password. A tick box would be nice though for the option, that way both parties are happy.

I have to agree with you guys.

I'm overall happy with the speed of the OS, especially in the store, compared to the ps3. Also, I haven't had any trouble finding my way around for most things, so I don't think its hard to figure out how to use it. They could improve how some of the deeper settings options are accessed though. I've missed a few options thanks to that. As far as the speed of jumping in and out of a game, I agree, it just feels awesome when it works and its been working great for me speed wise.

There are a handful of things they could do to improve it as you guys mentioned. A lot of it is just adding features that were already on the ps3, but they could improve the layout in some areas of the OS and add some more user control over how it behaves such as filters and enabling/disabling some features.

I'm not a fan of the store layout or how they are handling the activity feed, to name a couple things that stick out to me. DLNA support is high on my personal list of wants as far as new features go. Also, the ability to play my own music from the ps4 while I'm playing a game. I still can't believe such a basic feature was left off next gen consoles at launch.

I really hope Sony is willing to be aggressive in rolling out updates. Seeing something this month would be nice.

Menus are at most 3-Options deep, Settings>Option Settings>Deepest Option level.

It is one of the most basic and simplistic options menus I've seen, not sure how you can miss a few options in it.

You have the ability to play your own music while you play a game on the PS4, Music Unlimited app which is a standard app which is pre-installed on the system and even directs you to the app when you first setup the PS4.

From another post I remember you said the PS4 camera doesn't log you into your profile via face login, but it does. It turns on, It see me and I'm logged into my profile. (Not sure what you believe happens)

Are you sure you own a PS4?

And back on topic, Update 1.53 is supposed to be out early Jan so hopefully in the next few days. Pulse headset support included.

I would definetely like to see some customization options and also work on the navigation aspect and objects arrangement of the UI.

Also i wouldnt mind local playback of media files from USB drives.

I just got the YLOD on the launch 60GB PS3 which i'd been using for streaming stuff. It'd be great if they could get that into the new firmware so i don't have to get another PS3 right now.

I'd heard January 15th (can't confirm) but it supposedly includes DLNA, and CD Playback as major functions, then improved support headset wise.

Are you sure you own a PS4?

That is the second time you have said that, stop it please. Drop the attack routine.

There are some options that weren't in the obvious spot or options that I wish were added to have control over. Its not a big deal. That was at launch by the way, of course now I know my way around it after seeing other tips that users have shared, etc.

Regarding the music, you do know that the Music Unlimited app does not allow you to play your own music don't you? You have to use their streaming service. I have used the free trial of it. I love that the app works in the background, I just want to be able to use it as a media player for music I already own. Do you even own a ps4? (a little joke to illustrate how silly it is to say that)

I want to be able to play the music that I already own, on my ps4 in the back ground either via my network or directly on the system via a usb drive maybe. Currently, there is no way to do that and I would love to see them add that. I could do it on my ps3, I could do it on my 360. Now neither console lets me do that (the X1 is even worse in that there are no apps to play music in the background). Its a feature I'd liked to use. DLNA support is part of that as well.

As far as the camera question. We got cut off before I could tell you, but the point I was making was regarding setup (the setup process reminds me of the process setting up Kinect v1, while the new Kinect setup is fewer steps) and its not a big deal. Once it is setup, it logs in just fine as long as the lighting is good enough. I've been using the feature myself. The only issue I have noticed is in low light or no light (such as only ambient tv light) the camera isn't as reliable (not shocking after having used Kinect v1). But I will remind you that this thread is not about camera issues, so start another thread if you want to discuss it.

when is hdcp being removed   is it this update too

I don't think many people are wanting to capture gameplay video without using the PS4's own gameplay capture methods so I don't see this being a priority for Sony.

If its something you really want to do then there are ways around it.

I hope it does drop on the 15th with DNLA support. Thats pretty much the only feature I am really wanting, other than that, the other stuff can be fixed over time :)

Unlikely(impossible actually), as the PS4 doesn't have a CD laser at all.

Here is some information from the blu-ray association: (Sony is a founding member btw)

Q: Can I play DVDs, CDs and MP3 discs on a Blu-ray player?

A: DVDs will play on all existing Blu-ray players (with 1080p upconversion via HDMI in most cases); most current players will play DVD-R/RW recordable discs as well. Some early models lacked the ability to play CDs, but virtually all current models support CD playback (including homemade CD-Rs and CD-RWs). Many current models also support MP3 playback, but be sure to check individual product specs carefully for this feature if it's important to you.

Well there is a fairly vocal minority of users that were not happy to hear that Sony was making it harder on them to use their capture hardware. Most of those people are pro/semi pro casters on places like YouTube. They can be very loud thanks to their high visibility in the community. Unfortunately, Sony's current capture abilities don't measure up to what they can do with their own captures.

I'm not too fussed about captures in all honesty, as it's most likely not going to get used on my system, but I do understand there are users who will, so great.

I'm more interested in better Bluetooth support for my Logitech headset, (dlna would be nice too, and seeing as the xbox allegedly can bypass cinavia, maybe sony should too)

(I'm running the risk of using up all the ports on my hdmi splitter)

Sony are doing the HDCP removal its just not coming in this update.

Here is a guide to bypass it until then:

Yes I know, that has already been said in this and other threads. Those people were happy to hear that.

As you pointed out, there is a way around it, its just not as easy as say native support. So until the update comes to remove the protection on all content, those people will be waiting or go through the work around.

Didn't they say that the PS4 would support HDMI 2.0 trough a firmware update as well? That would be nice.

i may be wrong, but i thought HDMI was hardware related. Also, there's the licensing aspect...

Yeah just give me DLNA support and support for the Pulse Elite, and to me the PS4 is a near perfect system already.

Keep in mind I do not bother with capturing games, sharing gameplay, getting into parties all that much if ever, hell, I do not even listen to my own music when playing a game (never have as I tend to believe the audio of the game is just as much part of the experience as the visuals). I just like a good machine that lets me easily play games, and as such, I already think it is pretty damn near perfect.

I personally prefer the simplicity of the UI, sure a little customization would be nice but it is not the end of the world if I cannot customize it. Remote Play on Vita is nothing short of genius IMHO, works so much better than I ever thought it would, and the only real complaint I initially did have was the camera add-on I purchased was not working, but turns out it was working and I just did not know it was LOL It does log me in via the camera just as it should.

DLNA support would be great though, although I have to say I am pretty sure my PS3 is going to stay set up for quite some damn time honestly. GT6 alone would make sure of that, but with the latest 14 for 14 sale, plus all the good games still being offered through + for the PS3 (I never beat Bioshock Infinite, so really may revisit it), it does in fact look like the PS3 will stay hooked up in my household for quite some time, so I do have the DLNA support of it, but it would no doubt be kick ass if I could at least have the option of one day retiring it to go all PS4.

DLNA support is a must. I believe Sony said it was coming in a future fw update.

I dont dislike the UI, but i still like XMB better. I hope Sony tweaks the UI a bit. I still cant find my way around it and things seem to rearrange themselves at will.

Licensing shouldn't be an issue.

SONY claims they can update their 4K TV's. Maybe they have something reserved for the PS4. That or a future revision will support HDMI 2.0 out of the box (despite not being able to use it to its fullest potential).

That is a big question mark. Neither console have official hdmi 2.0 support, but maybe the hardware can handle it with a firmware update. I hope that is the case.
