In thread online indicator?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This is must like the OP suggestion where Ive seen it on other forums.

Currently, at the bottom of the pages, we have a list of members viewing the forum/thread...On the main forum page, we have a list of the users online (while I make this topic, why are these in the last 60 minutes? Is there a reason it isnt live?). How about a indicator beside each post when someone is online (live)?

The indicator can be a green circle.

The indicate can be the username is bolded.

What do you think? :)

We used to have those indicators, but they were moved to the user card that pops up when hovering over a username. I think it's better there as it reduces clutter and makes a cleaner interface.

Well, I know the staff considers "post count" a clutter so I wouldnt be surprised if they consider a green circle clutter as well...

A green indicator and/or a post count (both could be optional) is not clutter. Just more quick information.

Thank you for your reply Jeston. You may close this thread if you wish.

Nah, it's always best to wait for feedback from an admin as it's ultimately their decision :)

It wouldn't necessarily be accurate either as it may just show logged in members which includes those who leave the browser page open whilst browsing somewhere else or their PC running with the browser page active.

I remember the indicator and don't think it cluttered the screen.  The pop up card on the other hand I block as they get annoying when they pop up unwanted( when cursor is in that location and you scroll).

On the other hand, I don't really see the need to know who is actually online at that moment.  And if you need to message someone (i.e. a Mod), then look at the list at the bottom of the page.

And the reason the online indicator at the bottom isn't live is (probably) to do with resources. It takes 60 times more resources to keep checking every second than once a minute. :p

There is a timeout option which will show the person offline if they leave the browser page open for 6 hours.

Everything it seems clutters the screen nowadays. As soon as I read it was considered clutter, I knew it wasnt gonna be implemented.

The list is only avaliable at neowin.net/forum , not at the thread you are currently only.

I consider "live" (referring to your resources comment) a minute or even 5 minutes but 60 minutes?

But anyways close this thread. Considering a online indicator is clutter is just.....*sigh*, I rather the thread be closed :) Thank you

Even with a browser autorefresh enabled?

Hello,

Even with a browser autorefresh enabled?

AFAIK, none of the major browsers as default without plugins has a autorefresh function.
