NFL "Freezer Bowl" game: play or not?

Recommended Posts

Tonight's NFL playoff game between the Green Bay Packers (Wisconsin) and the San Francisco 49ers (California) looks to be a "Freezer Bowl" - with one of the coldest game days ever.

70,000+ people will attend, and Green Bay's stadium is NOT covered. The game time is 4:40 PM local (1640L), just as the coldest weather hits.

Check out the latest National Weather Service Forecast for Green Bay, Wisconsin:

Well, Homer remembers the Ice Bowl game, and Lombardi and Jerry Kramer and all that. But he also remembers there was no OSHA back then, and fewer lawyers.

The last time Homer saw an NWS forecast that stopped him in his tracks like this one was the last week of August, 2005, when a forecaster in the New Orleans Office put out a warning of unprecedented destruction and saying that life as we know it would be impossible for months in areas directly hit by Hurricane Katrina.

These NWS guys don't mess around.

Homer is sick and tired of the wussification that has become the National Flag Football League. But this is weather that - as Garrison Keillor once said - "makes a serious attempt to kill you."

So, gang, whaddya do? Postpone? Move indoors to Minnesota? Play as scheduled?

Packers fans thrive on cold weather I bet some will be shirtless, lose their nipples from frostbite and think its great because they have a great story to tell their grandkids.

Not to mention, there will no doubt be copious amounts of alcohol involved.

You won't have the wind chill in the stadium, it'll also be a lot warmer due to the lights and the many many killowatts of human body heat.

Man, that is just not true at all.
