+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 5, 2014 Subscriber² Share Posted January 5, 2014 There have been rumors floating on the net about the unveiling of Sony?s new PS4 virtual reality headset at CES, and that?s most likely to happen during the company?s press conference on Monday or CEO Kaz Hirai?s keynote on Tuesday. Luckily, even if you won?t be able to attend the event in Las Vegas, both conferences will be livestreamed. The press conference will air on January 6th at 5 PM PST, and will be livestreamed directly by Sony here (you can find the video embedded at the bottom of the post). Kaz Hirai?s keynote will be livestreamed by Cnet here on January 7th starting at 8:30 AM PST (the conference proper will start at 9 AM). Will Sony really unveil its response to the Oculus Rift? We?ll know in two or three days. http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/01/04/both-sonys-ces-press-conference-and-kaz-hirais-keynote-will-be-livestreamed/
trooper11
Wow, that's cool. Talk about brining some excitement right after the big holiday launch. I really want it to be true though. The last thing I want is more over hype that does not deliver. I mean, its got to be something big, why else would Sony waste their time with a keynote, etc. I guess the only other thing that they may see as big is some kind of announcement around 4K tvs, but still. Its got to be something new like this. So, any takers on how much this will cost and how it might compare to the Oculus Rift? (Oh and I think Audioboxer got so excited, he posted it twice! j/k) neoadorable 1 Share
spenser.d
Eh, I personally couldn't be less interested in something like that, but that's just me. It will be interesting to see what they do with it though if indeed they announce it.

A single click is almost always registering as a double click, no idea if I can fix it or if it's just goosed. Will probably need to pickup a new mouse eventually so I don't keep giving the NW staff double topics to clear up haha. trooper11 1 Share
trooper11
I'm not going ot be able to watch the stream live tonight, so hopefully one of you guys watch it and shares any exciting news. Its interesting that most gaming sites seem to be following Valve's event that will be starting at 8PM EST. There isn't even mention of Sony's event. Hopefully that doesn't mean some know there will be no gaming related announcements from Sony. Of course it could also just be the enormous hype train that has developed among the gaming news sites and parts of the gaming online community around Steamboxes. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted January 7, 2014 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2014 I won't be able to stay up for Valve but I'll be watching Sony's. Said this on Twitter to AB but I'd really prefer to see oculus rift support rather than a propietary headset, but not counting on it happening. Wondering if we'll get any hints to tomorrow's big GameInformer front cover reveal.

trooper11
Darn, the Ustream connection is really laggy right now. Luckily, there is not much to miss, just 4K and Netflix. Oh man, I'm so glad the Smurfs 2 was shot in 4K

trooper11
Alright, well they are now talking about a new Walkman, so I'm starting to think we wont hear about a VR headset or anything ps4 specific at this event.
trooper11
I take that back, they just started talking about the VR headset they already announced a while back. Wow, it was a very quick mention, a little tease about head tracking, and nothing new to announce. ..Whoa... they have gone into discussing their new 'Sony SmartWare Experience' which is basically hardware and software that tracks everything you do, so that you can 'rediscover your past' I'm pretty shocked this is a serious thing. Sony seems quite serious about pushing this.

trooper11
Alright, well that was a nothing show. But of course, they said Kaz has more to say tomorrow, so now we can all move our hype/hope to that event. Just don't be too sad if it doesn't amount to much either. GotBored
Sony announced a VR Headset but it was only a teaser. "...head-mounted display that replicated a 750-inch screen when worn to watch movies or play games" - not much details Other points of interest: "With our 4K displays last year our theme was watch. At IFA it was create. This year (CES) it's play." Sounds like this year Sonys focus will be on the PS4. "Sony's also collaborating with YouTube on VP9 a new video codec" Sony and YouTube are already working together, hopefully it means share feature on PS4 will allow uploads to YouTube soon. Walkman Headphones: We're seeing Sony's new Walkman waterproof headphones. Three minutes of charge time, it'll run for sixty minutes. - Pretty impressive quick charge. Rest was mostly about other 4K Sony products and also Sony's own version of Netflix (Video Unlimited becoming Video Unlimited 4K) which will stream 4K content to Sony devices (PS4, Smart TV's & Other devices) - Amazing Spider Man 2 and RoboCop (Made by Sony Studios) which are coming out this year were showcased on the screen - It'd be awesome if Sony allowed them to be streamed while they were being aired at the cinemas. LittleNeutrino Veteran Posted January 7, 2014 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2014 I was very underwelmed with Sony's offerings this year. the headset is ok but im still not impressed. I am also a bit disappointed that they are using 4K incorrectly and in fact are not producing 4K displays. just UHD 4K is 4096 x 2304 UHD is 3840 x 2160 The aspect ratio is rather different. and 4K is meant for a Cinema whereas a UHD display would be a home television. I think everyone is using it that way though. Sounds cooler than UHD :p I'd be more disappointed that they're distorting something that just simulates a very large screen into being VR. trooper11
"Sony's also collaborating with YouTube on VP9 a new video codec" Sony and YouTube are already working together, hopefully it means share feature on PS4 will allow uploads to YouTube soon. Hopefully it also means a youtube app for the ps4 soon, but the sharing option would be great too, or maybe an option to save it to an online storage service that would allow you to do want you want with your clips easier than first loading it up to a specific media service. They didn't mention the ps4 specifically in regards to streaming 4k content, but I would be shocked if that was not the plan. The interesting thing is that the guys from Netflix pretty much shoot down the possibility of 4k streaming due to a lack of HDMI 2.0 support mainly. I do wonder how Sony (and MS for that matter), plan to roll out 4k output support on their console. If they plan to just use it on the ps4 using the current HDMI connection, that will limit them to 4k30p, which would be fine for most movies, but not all content. trooper11
Reading the CES opening remarks makes me wonder about the future focus of tech in general. Once again, they are hyping up the idea of tech that tracks everything you do, including all wearable tech (to make your life 'smarter'). I didn't realize there would be such a public focus on that aspect of new tech.
