Video/Audio recording from webcam?

Hello,

Im looking to record a video (with audio) thru my webcam in a few days but its a built in one and AFAIK doesnt come with any software. What software can I use?

I do want it to be able to record in a format where I can make easy edits later on (such as make the clip shorter, cut out parts that I go on a rant about, etc). BTW, anyone that can recommend a EASY program for that too, thanks :p

the windows live setup allows you to pick what you want, you do not have to install the whole suite.

But lets say it only saves in format X, just convert it to whatever you want.. There are like a gazillion video conversion tools out there, handbrake is one of my favs.

What dell do you have, my son, wife and daughter in law all have dells and it comes with cam software.

Its not going to be in the drivers download section - its in a different area, see the instructions above.. Example here is for my daughter in laws old N5110

This looks like a webcam streamer.

It can stream, but it can also output to a file, take a peek at the screenshot of Settings.

Microsoft Lifecams I believe can do that also, (some come with software cd's, some go through windows update)

Doesn't the windows movie maker allow to record off your webcam?

When I get home I will connect my webcam and validate - but I do believe simple google found this

As to software - every laptop I have setup in last few years the Maker provided webcam software.. That I do believe allows you to record, etc. What is this laptop you have? When you say your webcam is built in, I assume laptop.

Other than any video editing software should be able to do this - I have Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12, and it has capture video option where you could pick your webcam device. When I get home I can validate that it works with my webcam as well.. I have never actually used it for that ;) Use it more to edit movies off my quickcam, etc.

I havent used Movie Maker since XP. In XP Im SURE it didnt allow webcam recording. Let me check it out in Windows 8.1.....

Ah thats right, its now a part of that Live package thing. Do you know where I can find a standalone installer? Im not sure if my memory is correct but I think the web installer (which includes optionally all Live products) installs other things as well.

Yup, its a built in Dell. It has no software (from what I see its service tag) for taking pictures/video/etc.

Well, the video editing portion can be done also with Movie Maker right? The "problem" is it can save only in WMV and Im not sure if Facebook (or YouTube if I cant) (where I plan to upload the video) supports this.

Ill try that Sony Movie Studio and see how it goes. Do you know where I can get the Movie Maker standaalone offline installer BudMan?

Debut is great, to bad that the installer gives you extra stuff without asking (shortcuts to NCH Software products in start menu folder) but you may delete them without losing functionality.

Well, it was to save quality and conversion time but it is Facebook so people dont really care.

But you never registered it on dell? You can do it now, not big deal then you can download that webcam software.

I normally wipe OEM installs as well, but now and then its good to look through what they include (sometimes rare, but sometimes there might actually be something useful) To me the only thing worth keeping was the webcam software ;)

If you google around you might be able to find it for download from some 3rd party location..

As to quality and conversion time - Even a 2 hour video converts in a few minutes, and you can convert the container without any loss of quality for sure, etc. I convert my grand daughter videos to flash, and yes lower the quality from 1080p 60fps to something more manageable all the time for allow easy streaming from my website for the family.

But you could also just do a change in the container or even a full convert without loss of quality.. Then again its going to be from a webcam ;) Its prob not going to be production quality video to start with ;)

I hate these things for this reason: It wont register the laptop....just stays on the registration page, downloads the System Tag detector and stops...

Yup, tried and it just dies when I run the service tag detector.

Well prob have some antivirus, or policy blocking it from running. I don't believe they support anything other than IE, what flavor of IE are you running?

Where exactly are you trying to register it.. Don't you just put in the service code here?
