February Cover Revealed – Evolve
by Jeff Marchiafava on January 07, 2014 at 10:26 AM

Few independent studios sport the multiplayer pedigree of Turtle Rock Studios. After years of working on Valve's Counter-Strike series, the California-based developer created Left 4 Dead, a post-apocalyptic shooter that redefined cooperative gaming and landed the number-one spot on Game Informer's Top 30 Co-op Games of All Time list. Now the studio is combining its competitive and cooperative design expertise for a new, next-gen only IP: Evolve. Backed by publisher 2K Games, which paid a whopping $10.8 million for the IP in last year's THQ auction, Turtle Rock is taking full advantage of gamers' powerful new systems.

The sci-fi multiplayer-focused shooter pits a four-player crew of alien hunters against a separate player-controlled monster that grows larger and more powerful over the course of matches. Each hunter features its own unique items and abilities, and while the monster may be outnumbered, its size and an assortment of devastating attacks make it a more than formidable foe. Like Turtle Rock's previous titles, Evolve is being built with variety and replayabilty in mind; the result is a novel mix of cooperative and competitive multiplayer elements that's unlike anything we've played before. Our exclusive hands-on time with the game's four-versus-one hunt mode left us with plenty to be excited about, and you can get all the details in this month's issue.

Our 12-page look at Evolve reveals the first hunters, monster, and unique equipment players will get their hands on when the game releases on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 this fall. We also have a wealth of exclusive screens and hands-on impressions you won't want to miss. Check out the cover image below for your first hint at what's to come.

Original story:

Next-gen exclusive reveal coming with next Game Informer

Game Informer’s next cover will feature a next-gen exclusive title when it is revealed tomorrow. We’re having a flutter on Turtle Rock’s Evolve.

20140107_mystery.png

“We have a kick ass cover reveal tomorrow morning at 11:00AM Central. Next-gen only that I think people will flip out over,” editor Andy McNamara said on Twitter.

“For those asking for the definition of Next Gen in that tease, you will find out platforms tomorrow.”

In response to prompting, McNamara confirmed the reveal is not Gears of War, God of War or Half-life 3.

Although it could be anything at all, we’re picking on Evolve, a highly mysterious multiplayer project in the works at Turtle Rock Studios.

The Left 4 Dead developer amicably took back its independence from Valve in 2009, signing on with THQ for an unrevealed multiplayer title. Take Two Interactive picked it up when THQ collapsed, presumably for publication by 2K, but we’ve heard absolutely nothing about it in the interim.

It seems like time, and Turtle Rock’s community manager seems to be quite excited about something.

Thanks, Gematsu, Superannuation. Twitter links: 1, 2, 3

I'm going with Fallout 4. People wouldn't "flip" over a new IP. Gotta be a sequel/reboot IMO.

Looks like it'll be Alien: Isolation, Creative Assembly's game announced last year with SEGA. Listing leaked on the Xbox Marketplace.

Not sure that really counts as "flip" material, if it is the game GI will reveal.

If it is this game, maybe it's big news purely because Creative Assembly's forte is RTS?

With the Halo hint today I have a feeling that it could be Halo for Xbox One (Working title)

You know its going to end up dissapointing, when anything starts to stir up hype it always ends up a bit of a let down.

Yeah unless its games mentioned in GotBored's post - then it can't be that great unless its a new IP that is so original its mind blowing

Most likely it will be Halo 5 as Microsoft just announced that the game will be released in 2014. Or at least that is my guess.

Magazine reveals are never "shocking" these days. Every decent will have already leaked online months before :p

To be honest even the games (apart from Evolve, not really aware of that to comment) in that list aren't really mind blowing. Given the popularity of most of them, sequels are pretty much gaurenteed.

I can only think of one game (Timesplitters) that would truly blow my mind for the simple fact I loved the series so much and wish someone would bring it back.

This "announcement of an announcement" BS needs to stop. Gaming journalism is so pathetic. Also, since it's not Half-Life 3, I couldn't care less.

Prepare to be underwhelmed.

Every media outlet will boast about huge mega reveals for nothing. A proper Doom, Quake, MGS1 proper HD remake or any old SNES/SEGA 16-bit being reborn would be a "reveal". They'll most like Halo/Uncharted spinoff us.

@GotBored

Uncharted 4 is already in the works, no secret.

Hope not, Microsoft showed the teaser for it last year and we know its coming this year.

Lots of people stopped liking it once Bungie stopped making it also and Bungie has moved on to bigger and better things. (Destiny)

I'd say Last of Us 2 or Fallout 4 would make the editors hype build-up semi-justifiable because they haven't been announced yet, but that is just a list of games I think he may consider hype build-up worthy.

I know,

Don't get me wrong, if it is Fallout 4 I would be excited, not so much Last of Us because I don't own a playstation. I just think the phrase "flip out" needs something more than a sequel, if its a new IP then it needs to be something new completely. Not another FPS etc.
