AStaUK Posted January 7, 2014 Share Posted January 7, 2014 One of the girls in the office has brought her home PC in for me to look at. Originally I the PC once logged in to Windows (7 Home Premium 64bit) had a script error come up from some installed software, now she has an issue with Windows not loading, so had the PC brought in so I can look at it. PC goes through POST with no issues, and then sits there on the Windows 7 loading screen and does nothing (left it several hours). Next I tried to load safe mode, safe mode went through loading files and stops after loading "avgidsha.sys", great I thought perhaps and issue with AVG (she's running AVG2014), so loaded from a Linux Live CD and renamed the AVG folders and AVG drivers in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and rebooted in safe mode. Safe mode then stopped on "classpnp.sys". I then booted the PC with a Windows Recovery disc and tried to run "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d:\ /offwindir=d:\windows" which completed without error. I've also tried to enable boot logging/debug but no files are created, I don't think it's getting far enough in the boot process to generate these. I've since tried, System Restore, Last Known Good Configuration and none of them allow me to boot in to Windows. Memtest86 completes without error (4 passes). I've run Western Digitals hard drive tools to check the HDD for errors and that completes without issue. I've reset the BIOS to defaults and disabled everything except USB and Windows boot still fails. I've changed the SATA controller to IDE compatibility and boot still fails. I've recently tried to boot the PC using Herins BootCD running Mini XP, which also starts to load and then sits in the Windows XP loading screen. Short of reloading Windows and hoping for the best I'm out of ideas on what to try next. I suspect I am looking at some sort of hardware failure but can't seem to pin point it? Does anyone have any ideas? *edit*. Doh, should have posted this under "Microsoft (Windows) Discussion & Support", would a mod mind moving it for me. Brandon H Supervisor Posted January 7, 2014 Supervisor Share Posted January 7, 2014 one way to confirm or ween out the hardware possibility would be to take out the harddrive and put a clean one in and do a fresh install if the install goes smoothly and boots up to windows afterwords you know it's not a hardware issue (this is a good way to do it without messing with the client's files and still be able to test hardware related issues) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Already tried that, SATA controller was set to AHCI which is correct, switched it to IDE Compatible and made no difference to the Windows 7 boot. Although not tried it with the BootCD, might give that a go. Might be XP doesn't like AHCI without a 3rd party driver. Otherwise I'll boot from the Linux Live CD backup the data and try a reinstall. AStaUK Posted January 8, 2014 Author Share Posted January 8, 2014 BootCD failed with IDE Compatibility as well. So backed the data up to a network drive using a Linux Live CD. Attempted to reinstall Windows and it hangs during the "Setup is preparing your computer for first use", I'll open the back up and see about removing the HDD and see if I can swap with a spare I have in the office.
