Next gen console opening month(s) sales vs last gen

Recommended Posts

Didn't realize Wii U had a relatively successful launch.

Living on the success of the Wii. It didn't last long. Of the 2 million listed sales, I wonder how many were under 30...

I don't think many people really viewed the 360 as must have hardware when it launched. The original Xbox wasn't extremely well received, especially in the EU and Asia markets. (And IMO never would have survived without Halo.)

Wasn't the launch of the PS3 hampered by production problems? Though highly anticipated, they sold out of launch stock + the console was $600 or some junk. I remember they were on EBay for over a grand.

Better planning, improved production, and cheaper entry prices. I'm not surprised. Additionally, the digital era began last gen, and as expected, was quite clunky. This gen is expected to be much improved on that front and I think a lot of people are much more willing to accept it.

Why is the Wii not included in this graph? (Out 1 week after PS3.) Didn't want to make Sony and MS cry?

Seriously, where the **** are the Wii's numbers?

There wasn't enough BR diodes IIRC. Don't think it hampered the launch that badly though.

The UK PS3 launch was a disaster overall. Press turned up to retailers expecting a big launch party with queues lining the streets, In the end it was like 2 or 3 guys in places like HMV and the console was readily available everywhere. IIRC they did have at least one good launch party at a lagship GAME store in London though.

Well its a great start for the next gen. 7-8 million combined sales for the X1 and PS4 are very impressive to me.

I know some will just say that that doesn't matter at all if sales drop off a cliff over the next year like say the WiiU, but I just have a feeling we wont see such a brutal drop off for either console considering the games coming and the roll out of new features.

I remember the PS2 costing like AU$700 and the PS3 launching at AU$1000 in Australia, so it's really no wonder that the PS4 and Xbox One are selling so well over here.

I didn't even notice Wii U was so successful, not anymore of course, but such huge numbers for first 6 weeks. Great start for next-generation consoles too.

Man that is still ridiculous to me, so much money. These next-gen consoles are really great value.

YLOD 2 years in as well which sony refused to fix, nice shelf ornament with the rest of my consoles at the moment like to keep a model of each version. Will get it fixed one day. Still running original firmware from that year

There great value but are alot weaker in performance than the 360+ps3 were. If the ps4 cost the same price as the ps3 was at launch it would stomp every PC into the ground, same could said with the x1 to but difference now sony taking small loss on ps4 and MS breaking even/making a few $$ on each one instead of losing alot on the consoles and its all down to the economy. Would 4.2million ppl pay $600 for a PS4 or 3 million pay say $700 (adding an extra 100 for the kinect), hardcore yes average person nope so they both made the right decision to make it weaker but still able to deliver some impressive visuals, MS has extra functionality to attract people for it to be the center of the living room deal (ala kinect) sure it doesnt work that well for some people and is limited atm via which countries can get certain features but itll get better.

Btw this isnt a PC is better than consoles thing cus its not, with the gfx of x1 and PS4  now being able to do DX11 gfx its a win for the PC to cus it means games will be optimized alot better for dx11 gfx and high res textures rather than slapping it on as an afterthought and it running horribly.

Did you see how much money the PS3 lost Sony? It almost single handily killed the company. PC components are made up of parts individually crafted and invested in by separate companies that the end user, or a retail sales distributor can put together. Consoles are put together by one Company who has to bid on the parts made by others, in other words they have to use a middle man and pay the price for it.

PC component makers can also have high profit sellers and those that earn much less but cater to specific audiences (for example budget/mid-range/high-end GFX cards all from the one provider). Console makers are stuck selling one configuration only, and have to turn healthy profits on it.

i think the sales are so high because of how successful last generation was over the long term. Plus the fact that generation made online gaming and FPS mainstream on consoles.

People are buying the new XB1/PS4 the same a PC user upgrades their PC.

Yeah thats why i said there playing it safe this time by taking a small loss, i think there losing about $60 on each one if they kept the pricing the same as originally planned and were going to break even i assume the $60 is for the extra 4GB of GDDR5 they added, its a good job really cus if theyd of kept it at 4GB it would of crippled the system. BF4 recommends 3GB of GDDR5 to run at max settings, think 2GB is enough for most cases although its prolly when your pushing 1440p it needs 3GB i dunno or maybe when running high AA which neither console can do. think ps4 employs FXAA, low performance hit and just blurs lines rather than smoothing it

The current generation will easily outdo the previous one in terms of revenue, but will also be shorter. Those extra year or two the 360 and PS3 lingered really threw things into disarray and made the current Gen launch more anxious than it should have been. Still a great start, the launch lineups were not perfect by any means, but better in my opinion than any previous platform launch. And the numbers are very impressive.

is there any reason they are not using the same time frame for each of the consoles?

Most likely those are the time lapses between milestone announcements from Microsoft etc.

Much like they've done with the X1/PS4. They haven't released weekly numbers, only arbitary points in time when they've reached x million or there has been an event to broadcast it.
