The_Observer Posted January 15, 2014 Share Posted January 15, 2014 I consider myself a reasonably sensible person, I don't celebrate Australia day by covering myself in temporary tats of the Australian flag or of the southern cross, I don't tape the Australian flag to my car or don the warpaints for my face in the colours of the flag, I guess you could say my patriotism or nationalism is pretty well subdued. That being said I quite like the idea and look of the shirt and am pretty disappointed - but not surprised - that something so ridiculous has caused such a stir. Its amazing that people will comment and get so wound over a shirt or something that can be connected via six degrees of separation to racism yet those same people don't say a damn word or lift a finger when more important debates about the future of our nation and society occur. We have a New Zealand day? Closest we have is Waitangi day but that's not exactly the same thing is it? It's not exactly a national day of happiness and celebration... We don't do patriotism well here in NZ at all. And if you thought Australian patriotism was impressive, go live in the States for a year. If Australian patriotism is 10 on the 1-10 scale, the Americans go straight to 100, and it's not just on the 4th of July - it's the little things like the flag on every train, boat, truck, etc. that really stand out. Australia was founded in 1788 therefore this Tshirt, while not exactly a stylistic wonder, is correct and not racist.
