The name may have been founded on that date but the country and its ethnic people have been there for many more years and I guess they see it as a celebration of not so much founders as carpet baggers so it would depend on your viewpoint as to if an offense were likely.

Its wrong anyway.

While the state of New South Wales was founded on 26/01/1788, Australia was made on 01/01/1901.

New South Wales or Sydney Est 1788 would be fine.

It was invaded in 1776 when Cook first landed here.

People are becoming too racist. Perhaps getting it from the USA who have an obession with patriotism. And people wanted to follow the examples of USA.
