NBA Live 14 vs NBA 2K14 Impressions

Recommended Posts

My friends and I don't play tons of sports games, but for years we have enjoyed playing the NCAA college football games from EA. Well, with the news that there will be no more games in that genre, we are looking for another sports series to play for next gen.

Right now we are leaning towards basketball. Madden never interested us and while soccer games can be fun, basketball has been more enjoyable recently in games we have tried and playing the demos currently out.

So that brings me to my question. Anyone that has played either or both of these games, what are your impressions? Technical issues might be unique to different platforms, but general impressions of gameplay, etc apply to all of them, so it doesn't matter what console you have played these on.

There is no demo for nba 2k14 on the new consoles, so I can't just download both and compare. Reviews haven't been very helpful either and if you look at Amazon user reviews, both games are getting slammed regarding various issues. Its really hard to see which is the better choice. Maybe neither are worth buying.

Also, I wont be paying full price as I intend to buy a used copy from Amazon. 2K14 is currently more expensive there at $40, while I can get Live 14 for $33.

NBA 2K has been widely regarded as the best NBA video game franchise for many years.

NBA Live 14 currently has a Metacritic score of just 46. User scores are a dismal 2.5 out of 10. And now, EA has a message to its fans: It's sorry.

"I?m not going to lie; it?s been a rough week," said executive producer Sean O?Brien in a post on the EA Sports blog. "As you can imagine, this isn?t exactly the NBA Live comeback story we were hoping for this year. We hear loud and clear that some of you are disappointed in various aspects of NBA Live 14, and I?m sorry if the game doesn?t live up to your expectations."

I have always thought 2K made the best Sports games, they convinced me on the dreamcast. I always loved MLB 2K series more than anything else, the Show comes in a close second for the new gen, i always thought their football games were better and they even dropped their prices to get more people to play and i also thought nba 2k series was better than anything out there. They make great sports games in my opinion.

It certainly sounds like 2K14 is the one to get.

So does anyone here actually own it and comment on any issues with the game?

2K14 is great. I love playing the career, the graphics are stunning and the gameplay is really deep without being too intimidating for new players. I started with 2K13 and once I got shot timing down I felt able to approach the other more-complicated elements at my own pace (just as well because I knew little of the sport going in).

The only major issue is that it is always-online. Seems to have been resolved now, but for over a week following Christmas it was complete pot luck as to whether you could play it or not due to server problems.

I finally put 2K14 in this weekend (have owned it since launch thanks to the Amazon B2G1 sale), and my initial impression was very positive. Visuals are very good (not as good as I thought they would be though TBH based on all the hype it was receiving in that department). And it really seems like you can get really, really in depth with the gameplay if you want. Just playing around with the different offensive and defensive set plays, the way you can change the overall approach for offense and defense (aggressive, safe, etc. etc., it had a particular name that is escaping me right now). Just definitely seems like a stellar game from the 45 minutes or so I did check it out.

With that said, I traded my copy into Amazon for $29 credit and an additional $20 PSN bonus credit.  I just do not have time to play all the games I own right now and I have no friends who own the game, so this was a game that was not going to get played all that much realistically even though it seemed to be very good. Since I did get it for free, decided to get that credit while I could.

I buy 2k every other year, I own every even number in the series. I started with the original NBA2K on Dreamcast.

I've never been let down. They've each provided many, many hours of entertainment.
