Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Version Cannot Update to Windows 8.1

36 posts in this topic

I bought a legitimate copy of Windows 8 Pro Upgrade version about a month ago. While doing a clean install on my desktop computer, I found out that you cannot do a clean install from an upgrade version of Windows. I figured out how to do a clean install of Windows by following the steps on this website: http://lifehacker.com/5984278/how-to-do-a-clean-install-of-windows-8-with-an-upgrade-disc

When I open the Windows Store App, I can't find the option that lets me update to Windows 8.1. Is there anyway I can legitimately update my copy of Windows to Windows 8.1?

Are you fully updated? There is a Windows update that has to be installed before you can update to 8.1

As far as I'm aware there should be no restrictions for the update other than the one required patch

Check to make sure Windows Updates are all up to date - you'll be rebooting like crazy, unfortunately. All those need to be installed before 8.1 shows up in the store.

Yeah I activated Windows when I first installed it.

Go to the search charm, and enter "wsreset.exe", run that, then reboot your PC. See if that works.

Do you know how to check which updates you have installed? Click into the Control Panel, and look for View Update History. Check to see if you have KB 2871389 installed.

I just googled the KB2871389 update and downloaded from Microsoft's website. When I run the update, it says "The update is not applicable to your computer"

Do you have Optional Updates and Microsoft Updates turned on in Windows Update?

Hmm never mind, it says the update is already installed on my computer.

Copy and paste this  ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade  into IE address bar, make sure you have installed all updates in Win 8 first.

It will take you to the store Win 8.1 update page.

I still can't see any option for the Windows 8.1 update in the Windows store. Update KB2871389 is installed on my computer.

What processor do you have in the machine? Can you post a screenshot of your system specs by any chance?

See my previous post about 8.1 support.

Before you go through that hassle, did you try the Upgrade Adviser that was suggested?

I couldn't download the update when I ran the Upgrade Adviser. It directed me to go to the Windows store. I still can't see the update in the store.

The .iso might actually allow you to upgrade, but it depends on the region and configuration of your computer. :)

Not to be questioning your honesty, but are you sure you're using a legitimate copy of Win 8 and is it activated?
