ds12345
I bought a legitimate copy of Windows 8 Pro Upgrade version about a month ago. While doing a clean install on my desktop computer, I found out that you cannot do a clean install from an upgrade version of Windows. I figured out how to do a clean install of Windows by following the steps on this website: http://lifehacker.com/5984278/how-to-do-a-clean-install-of-windows-8-with-an-upgrade-disc When I open the Windows Store App, I can't find the option that lets me update to Windows 8.1. Is there anyway I can legitimately update my copy of Windows to Windows 8.1?
Anibal P
Are you fully updated? There is a Windows update that has to be installed before you can update to 8.1 As far as I'm aware there should be no restrictions for the update other than the one required patch
Dot Matrix
Check to make sure Windows Updates are all up to date - you'll be rebooting like crazy, unfortunately. All those need to be installed before 8.1 shows up in the store.

Dot Matrix
Go to the search charm, and enter "wsreset.exe", run that, then reboot your PC. See if that works.

snaphat (Myles Landwehr) Member Posted January 10, 2014 Member Share Posted January 10, 2014 Confirm that you have KB2871389. I know you said you have required updates, but make sure since you have the correct edition and license based on what you said. EDIT: Also did you try the 8.1 upgrade assistant? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-assistant-download-online-faq
Dot Matrix
Do you know how to check which updates you have installed? Click into the Control Panel, and look for View Update History. Check to see if you have KB 2871389 installed.
ds12345
I just googled the KB2871389 update and downloaded from Microsoft's website. When I run the update, it says "The update is not applicable to your computer"

+Raze Subscriber² Posted January 11, 2014 Subscriber² Share Posted January 11, 2014 Copy and paste this ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade into IE address bar, make sure you have installed all updates in Win 8 first. It will take you to the store Win 8.1 update page.
Dot Matrix
If you're still not seeing the update, your PC might not be compatible with Win8.1. Microsoft did drop support for a select few older processors with the update.

ds12345
Hey guys I also posted the same query on another forum: http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/38803-windows-8-pro-upgrade-version-cannot-update-windows-8-1-a.html I followed their advice and managed to download a Windows 8.1 ISO. I want to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my system. What should I do next?

ds12345
I couldn't download the update when I ran the Upgrade Adviser. It directed me to go to the Windows store. I still can't see the update in the store.
LimeMaster
The .iso might actually allow you to upgrade, but it depends on the region and configuration of your computer. :)
+Raze Subscriber² Posted January 11, 2014 Subscriber² Share Posted January 11, 2014 Not to be questioning your honesty, but are you sure you're using a legitimate copy of Win 8 and is it activated?
