Something better than Wordpress?

Question

Is there a CMS that is lighter and faster than Wordpress?

I find that the default installation of Wordpress is fine, but once you add a few plugins to it, it becomes slow. Or most themes, which are supposed to simply be themes over take the entire platform and mess with output and make it confusing to maintain.

Anything new on the horizon? Or an old friend that most people overlook?

Haven't messed with it myself, but a friend of mine is quite happy with Ghost. Not even remotely as popular or as flexible as WordPress, but he says it's really slick if it meets your needs. Usually go with Joomla myself, but far from lightweight.

I don't think you'll find many CMS's that are lighter, feature rich and a big community.

Don't blame Wordpress for slowing down because of Plugins, look at the plugin and see what it is doing. Poorly coded plugins can slow down a page.

If you are looking for a blog program, I second this.

What are you wanting to do with it?

It's mainly for a chess tournament I run annually. http://www.cctchess.com

I had a fancier theme on the site, but it slowed down dramatically, and I purchased Gravity Forms as Contact 7 was slow as well. Right now the site is fast and I don't have issues, but I was wondering if there was some new and exciting on the horizon I could get in to and grow with.

You'll probably have better success at improving the speed by looking at your server platform, make sure your not on a shared server or a provider that has reasonable amount of clients per server, and look at the server software as well, like the new faster more optimized platform neowin runs on now, don't remember the name right now.

90's post  (Y)

You have no idea how not-90's Drupal is. It's used a lot for some very impressive sites and is actually the fastest growing serious CMS.

But it's way overkill for most people. Ghost looks interesting!
