should I get a new ssd?

Recommended Posts

I'm waiting for my new lenovo (T440p) to get here, comes with hdd, should I buy a new ssd for it or use my current ssd? It's the Samsung 830. Would it be sufficient for regular use?

Vague much?

the model of the Lenovo, please? Does it support SATA III? if no then stick with your 830 (it will be underused anyways); if yes then you can get a 840 but honestly i doubt much if the average user will see a big performance increase.

I'd keep the 830 if it were me. You probably won't notice performance improvements in practice by moving to a sata iii drive.

Hello,

If your T440p boots from a hard disk drive, or even uses an SSHD or ExpressCache, you should replace it with a SSD, which should improve both performance and battery life.

However, whether or not you want to use the Samsung 830 SSD depends on a few things:

  • First of all, capacity.  You did not mention the size of the Samsung 830 SSD, so the first question I would ask is if it has enough capacity for all of the things you would currently like to use the drive for, plus a significant enough margin of free space for future use.  If the drive is not big enough for your intended usage, get a larger one.
  • The second thing I would suggest checking is the health of the drive, as Shiranui noted.  I would suggest using Samsung's own Samsung Magician software to check this, as well as downloading and installing the latest firmware for the Samsung 830 SSD from that page, if you have not already done so.
  • If you do decide to purchase a new SSD, I would suggest reviewing the ThinkPad T440p Hardware Maintenance Manual first for the steps on how to replace the drive.

If you do decide to install a new SSD, I would suggest going with a M.2 (formerly NGFF) form-factor SSD, which is the replacement for the older mSATA-sized drives, as this leaves internal drive bay and the Ultrabay open for future expansion.  M.2 SSD's come in a few different lengths, so you will want to be sure that the one you select fits in the T440p, which is where the Hardware Maintenance Manual will be useful.  Otherwise, if you do decide to go the internal drive bay route, I believe you will need a 7mm high, as opposed to the 9.5mm high, SSD drive.  There's no difference between 7mm and 9.5mm SSDs other than the 2.5" plastic (or metal) drive shell, and they cost the same.

Lastly, I would strongly suggest ordering a Recovery Disc set from Lenovo/IBM support for your T440p.  Aside from using these to load a clean factory image of the OS to your new SSD-equipped T440p, when it comes time to recycle or sell your T440p, you'll be able to use those to restore it to factory condition.
