Windows 8.1 Visual Studio 2012 Issues

Recommended Posts

I installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop and am trying to install VS 2012. First of all, I downloaded the exe from the Microsoft Store about 2 hours ago. When I clicked the installer, it said "Program compatibility mode is on, turn it off and try again". However, it was not turned on. I did some research and I had to rename the exe file to vs_professional.exe. Ummm...WHAT? Why would the name of the installer cause this issue? This is direct from connect.microsoft.com posted in September. They said they would have an update for this soon. However, it is January and I still need to rename the downloaded file?

Next: I get about 80% through the install and it says "Unable to locate package source. So again, I did some research and there was a support article saying "Visual Studio 2012 might not install after October 2013". Again....WHAT?

So one of the resolutions in that article was to download the latest installers. But here is the problem, I JUST DID that. I went to the microsoft store, logged in, and downloaded VS 2012.

Has anybody else had these issues? I am downloading the ISO version to see if that one is better.

Seems like an oddball way to go about it, but the installer might do a simple filename check against a list of known "troublesome" setup files.

It's fine. You just need to build a time machine and hop back... No guarantee that it works, but did you try resetting the system time and date to get around it?

Well I downloaded the web deployer 3.0 and installed that. Then I installed VS 2012 using the ISO format. That seemed to work. I did get a warning after install about office tools. Sigh!
