eset Since windows 8.1 upgrade, trouble with uninstalling programs, missing msi files!

So since I upgraded to Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store back last year, I've been having issues getting programs to uninstall. Programs have included Java (which I removed with revo uninstaller) as well as my now issue Eset Smart Security.

 

I have Eset Smart Security 6 and want to upgrade to SS7, however when it comes to removing the old version (before installing the new version) I get a message saying Windows can't find the msi file in the Windows TEMP file.

 

 

Firstly, why the heck it is looking in the temp directory?

 

And secondly, how do I repair this?

 

Googling the msi file yielded no results.

Have you tried uninstalling it through the Control Panel?

Check in the "windows.old" (or windows.001, etc) folder, if you still have it.

I did try that, however this is the message it throws at me after saying cancel to the same picture as above:

I don't recall deleting it, however I don't have a windows.old folder :(

no you wouldn't have a windows.old folder because you probably upgraded to windows 8.1 (windows.old only appears when you do a clean install over windows), here's a link to eset removal tools, probably just a corrupt install...

Never have security software installed when upgrading. Also never used registry cleaners (with the exception of CCleaner). What you can try is by running the "dism" command in an elevated command prompt:

 

Type this and click enter: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

 

Then after that run: sfc /scannow

 

Then run: chkdsk /f

Type Y

 

Reboot.

 

If the problem still exists then you can look online for another solution that might take a quite a bit of time. Or you can reformat (which may take much less time). Sorry about your issue. :-(

Some (not all) installs extract their files into the temp folder. Thats why it looks for the files if you try to uninstall them. And if you use something like ccleaner, then obviously it'll remove the files in the temp folder. if the option is ticked. And the only way you can fix it (I would say) is reinstall the old version (dont use ccleaner or similar), then you can uninstall it /  then update it

I've seen many .MSI errors when it comes to either installing Java updates or basically anything dealing with .MSI files. While I'm a little more liberal when it comes to making system changes, the solution might be a tad risky for you. It's likely to do with a corrupted registry value.

 

Look for that full filename in the registry and if it's contained in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\GUID (e.g. 00004109110000000100000000F01FEC)  then it's likely the cause. If you're willing to take a small risk, delete the GUID folder and re-try the uninstall. Make a backup first, I guess.

Have you tried reinstalling the application then turning around and uninstalling it?
