So this is your exchange server?

;; ANSWER SECTION:

ady199.co.uk. 3600 IN MX 0 smtp.secureserver.net.

ady199.co.uk. 3600 IN MX 10 mailstore1.secureserver.net.

;; ADDITIONAL SECTION:

mailstore1.secureserver.net. 265 IN A 68.178.213.37

smtp.secureserver.net. 104 IN A 68.178.213.37

You sure?? Because thats the MX for your domain your sending to ady199.co.uk

Now when I talk to that server he says he is running

p3plibsmtp02-14.prod.phx3.secureserver.net bizsmtp ESMTP server ready

I would think if sending to exchange smtp server, be more like

Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service ready

As in your kickback saying that address is rejected, if you directly connect to the server listed as your mx for ady199.co.uk and use that address - that smtp servers says sorry

rcpt to: administrator@ady199.co.uk

550 5.1.1 <administrator@ady199.co.uk> recipient rejected

So that is NOT your correct exchange server address?? Or you don't have it configured to accept mail for administrator@ady199.co.uk

edit:

BTW

"it's a dynamic IP at home"

So you want to send mail from a HOME IP? So sending to no name domains sure prob work if your ISP doesn't shut down outbound 25 like most isps are doing. But can tell you right now your not sending to major players for couple of good reasons. If your on a home IP, I doubt you can edit the PTR for your IP.. And second its most likely listed as a home dynamic IP, major players don't normally accept mail from IP ranges listed as for home use.. Its got a 99.99% chance of just being spam, etc.

Great you want to play with exchange and learn how it works, but don't expect to actual use it for any sort of real mail server on a home connection.

Are you hosted or on a dynamic IP at home?

Also in Exchange do you have enable anonymous users to connect enabled in the receive connector?

(that's what it was called in 2010 and older - haven't fully finished setting my 2012 R2 and EX2013 lab yet).

Hi - it's a dynamic IP at home

No I haven't set that option - Should I?? (On all receive connectors??)

Why are you running Technet/MSDN software in production, cause I know you didn't pay for Datacenter.

And yea, a dynamic IP isn't going to work to host an exchange server, unless you want to keep changing your MX record address every time it changes on you..

Yeah thanks for the tip Budman but you didn't set your MX records on Godaddy (i'm guessing) to point to your server. Those are the default ones for a domain created with them.

And yes, for people to be able to connect to your server anonymous needs to be enabled otherwise no other mail server will be able to connect. This is for outside people, other servers will be able to since they'll authorize as a Exchange server.

If he has technet or msdn there it's no issue. The purpose for those packages is so that they can learn. But Microsoft is allowing for 90 day trial of this software as well to replace their technet...so again I don't see an issue. Home is not a production environment, he has to connect to the net at some point to test mail flow.

"Home is not a production environment,"

That could be clearly debated.. I find it highly unlikely that MS intended their technet/msdn subscribers to be able to use say exchange in their home to send and recv email that they use as their primary email address.

If your serving up your media library to your TV, and this is how you watch your movies.. Not just a couple of tests, but hey that is my primary media library.. Yeah I would call that "production" Be it business related or not.

Now if what he is doing is firing this up to play/experiment with than sure I am with you.. But plans on setting up his mailbox here, and say a few friends, etc. And then starts using that email as address he puts on websites, forums, etc. etc. Ie is a primary mailbox that he uses for his day to day "production" then your outside the eula if you ask me.

I would not call setting up an Exchange Server at home for personal email to be production.  Nor using a dynamic IP, he's clearly learning. But if they've moved to 90-day trial he can use it however he wants for 90 days. Of course, MS has the final say.

Besides the configuration settings others have mentioned, you also can't host a mail server using a dynamic IP directly. You will need to rely on some service such as noip, dyndns, etc (do your research to see which one will work best for you and how much it might cost you). Finally, you need to setup your MX records correctly (after you get your Dynamic DNS service up and running). Right now you are using GoDaddy's default MX DNS records which obviously won't work unless you're using their mail servers.

As for licensing and such, I wouldn't stress over it too much. I don't see MS going after you for running an Exchange server at home lol I have a BizSpark subscription as well and although technically you might not really be supposed to do what you're trying to do in your case I think its more of a formality than anything else. Now if you're trying to run production mail for your business that you rely on making money from that's a different story.

I agree don't think the MS black helicopter ninjas are going to paying you a visit no matter what your doing ;) More interested in the academic side of the debate. Is using a copy of X that says "not for production use" in the eula.. Does not matter what it is.

To me I don't take the word production to only mean in a business sense where profit is being made or not being made (non profit company) etc. etc.

example line from a eula

The Product may only be used for development purposes as described in this EULA and may not be used in a production environment;

What sort of development would say he be doing if he was using this email for his day to day email. If this email hosted on this OS is being used in his day to day routine of emailing his friends/family, password reset email address, contact info given to people, etc. etc.

To me - that is production use. Its not development, its not testing, its actual use of the product as it was intended to be used for purposes other then testing that it actually does what it says it does, etc. Now sure there could be time period on this where hey I am "testing" it with my home/personal stuff to make sure it works and doesn't fail, etc. But come on would use a "test" anything as your password reset contact, would you put it on your resume for others to contact you? Its not all that difficult to determine if its being used for real "production" uses or just for development/testing/play/learning.

That is my point of the academic discussion.. Because I don't care if he bought that off a guy in a trench coat for $5, downloaded it from warez site X, or used his msdn/technet copy, etc. Does his morals tell him he is doing something wrong, that is for him to worry about not us. But what it does mean for say a public forum that is not into that sort of thing per their rules.. Is if it is a gray/questionable area - is it in or out or this or that side of the neutral zone for example.. Prob should not be promoted on such a site.

So as long as he "testing" or "trial" we are free to discuss without having to really too much about where/how he got the software.. But to me if he is looking to setup his personal domain that he will be using for his "production" home or not email address then its kind of on the wrong side of the neutral zone for promoting that sort of use of the software is my take.

But to the meat of the issue.. Even if we were talking the use of FREE email server software, running it off a home connection is going to be of no use other than play/test and would not be suitable for any sort of "production"

Understandable about legalities of usage in a home "production" environment. Opinions aside, it's off topic so until other clarifications are made regarding MX records and proper setup of the OPs system let's keep on topic. Further discussions about legalities will be deleted.

----------

As it seems to be working for the most part do you have the server setup as a authoritative server for your domain? If the server doesn't know it's the destination for that email address it also wont accept them.

Hi, I've now made some changes and hopefully the mx record is now correct(?) if someone could please check this.

And yes the server is setup as an authoritative server.

Yet I'm still getting the same problem......

Help....

So from above the ttl on the old MX was only 3600 seconds. So you tried from yahoo before, so sometime after 60 minutes you should be good to go and they will get the new MX.

Well after all that..I think I've reached an end point.

Whenever I send email to someone now from my exchange account I get a bounce back message to say that my IP is on a block list and won't accept messages from my IP address.

I take it there's nothing I can do......??

Thanks in advance

your ISP is probably host to spammers and an entire range served up buy your ISP is on an RBL. This is a good thing. People setting up Exchange to spam on dynamic IPs are a nuisance and a threat. :D

If nothing else, you're learning all about email, it's more than an exchange server.

"to say that my IP is on a block list and won't accept messages from my IP address."

Exactly what multiple posts have said about sending from a HOME IP.. You can use it for inbound, and if sending to say another email server you run that isn't setup to care for testing.. But never be able to send actual real email through it, etc.

You could send mail through a smart host is about your only option if you want to run the mailserver on your network.. Or get a business class connection where not listed as home and dynamic and able to alter the PTR.

Your IP is dynamic and as such is blocked by many mail servers by default. You can route though your ISPs SMTP server which is setup as a smart host on your server. I forget exactly where it is but i'm sure a quick google search can help you there.
