S4 Swollen Battery

Recommended Posts

Having discovered the battery on my S4 to have swollen, to the point where it looked like it was about to burst, I contacted Samsung and they said it was known issue and that I could either send it off for repair or take it to a service centre where they would replace the battery under warranty.

I asked if they could not just send out a new battery and was told they need to check the charging unit too so the next day I went to the Service Centre in Manchester Arndale shopping centre.

It took them approx 45 minutes to fix it. When I got home having had my phone wiped I needed to set it all up again. However when I put it on charge it wouldn't charge!! :argh:  Surely that's the first thing you check when you've replaced the battery.

Anyway I took it back in again to get this issue fixed. I have to go back tomorrow to collect. Each journey costs ?6.10 return on the tram to the city. Plus the time it takes etc.. I was not too pleased to say the least.

I was just wondering if anyone here had this issue and how did they get on with Samsung customer services, and what my chance was of getting the money back for an issue that simply isn't my fault.

Just today my colleague asked to have a look at my S4 to compare to his because he was having battery issues. We removed the backs of our phones and saw a semi-noticeable bulge occuring with his battery, whereas mine seems ok.

I haven't dealt with their customer service before, so I can't comment on that. But generally if I give something to someone to repair I tend to ask if we can go ahead and check that the issue is solved before I leave, and that other issues haven't appeared.

I wouldn't expect to be compensated for the journey though, even if it was their fault that you had to go back to them.

sorry to hear your circumstances, but warranty covers device only and nothing else. Otherwise someone could claim a million dollar expense (extreme) and want to be reimbursed.

The store (independent from warranty claim) could possibly refund you the second trip, would be up to the manager (i know i would since it's directly the stores fault). I have seen that happen before. But that has nothing to do with Samsung.

I checked that it would turn on and I could use my phone. (prior to this the phone was just in a boot loop) I didn't check to see if it would actually charge. You assume they would. But as assumption is the mother of all fu*k ups then I should have known better

Charging issue aside.. Why did they wipe your phone just because the battery was faulty?  That doesn't make any sense at all...

Sounds like new hardware, or they suspected software somehow screwing with it and did a factory reset to be safe.

You should be able to call your carrier and see if your IMEI has changed/different than before.

My LG battery failed after ~3 months but AT&T shipped a new one by FedEx and didn't want the old one. Of course defective LiIons could pull a Boeing 787 in transit so that could qualify as smart.

Regardless the issue, many service centers wipe the phone as step one, and then check whatever is the problem. Even if the problem is a broken screen and is out of warranty. Same thing happened to my local Sony Ericsson service (some years ago).

I assumed it was to do with the boot loop. I expected that to be fair. And my phone is always backed up so I wasn't too worried about it. You also sign that you are ok with that before they proceed.
