Atradese Posted January 21, 2014 Share Posted January 21, 2014 Hello all Im kinda new at this so please bear with me. My freinds and I share a wireless network. We have come to the conclusion that someone is stealing our internet and also remaining ivisible while doing so but we have definate and sudden drops in our bandwith to the point that a network that usually runs our 6 PCs easily will suddenly have trouble loading a single web page on one of them. We have tried restarting the router to make sure it wasnt a problem there. We even replaced it a month ago. We don't have any problems even if 5 of us are playing games and watching streaming videos at the same time and then suddenly no bandwith. Sorry if Im rambling but I really dont know enough about this to explaing it any other way. An help would be greatly appreciated. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Atradese Posted January 21, 2014 Author Share Posted January 21, 2014 Thanks for the quick reply. Im not sure how thats done buy my freind has the router in his appartment I will pass that on to him. Also are there any programs that may identify the individual? I figure since he is hitting our network there must be someway to force him to be visible or at least find out some way to identify him so we can confront him about it. IsItPluggedIn Posted January 21, 2014 Share Posted January 21, 2014 So when the bandwidth drops are connections between the PC's ok, or are they slow as well? Trying to find out if it is an issue with the Internet bandwidth or the local Lan bandwidth. From the DHCP list in the router you should be able to see the device name. Which may give you a clue as to who it is(probs not though). It may also be listed under connected devices or something like that on the router. What is the model of the router. farmeunit Posted January 21, 2014 Share Posted January 21, 2014 Steam, torrents, and other programs that download at full speed will slow down a network tremendously. It's good to throttle them to half speed or less with that many people. I use newsgroup to download TV shows, and when they're downloading, they'll saturate the network. You should be using WPA2 with a good secure PSK, something say over 12 characters, not dictionary words and change your SSID to something unique, not the default, etc. That will prevent anyone that you have not given the psk too from using your wifi. srbeen Posted January 22, 2014 Share Posted January 22, 2014 wireshark will expose everything. Intrepreting everything is something altogether different.
