XBox One Opening Apps On It's Own

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

Basically it does not matter what App I have as the "main" app on the One's Home Screen, the XBox One eventually opens it completely on it's own. I thought perhaps, just perhaps, I was enabling it by Kinect's voice commands, but I literally just sat there for 10 minutes and watched it happen and not a single thing was said in my house at all.

It has happened with everything from Dead Rising, to Ryse, to the NFL app, to Settings. Whatever is the last open main app on the home screen was, you know, the biggest square on the Home screen that shows what is currently running or what was last opened, it just opens up on it's own eventually. Controller is completely off. The One is obviously on but I usually am switched over to another component like my TV or PS4.

It was just mildly annoying at first, but now it is getting pretty damn frustrating. I purposely go to the Home Screen while playing a game to "pause" everything so I can just resume it, and I come back 45 minutes later only to find the game running and asking me to continue as I died.

So just wondering if anyone else is seeing anything similar? And perhaps if somehow my Kinect is responsible, although I just cannot see that being the case as it is my understanding you have to say the words "XBox go to (game or app)" and I am 110% those words are not being spoken in the every day conversation of my home.

Also an interesting note, my controller is almost always off when this happens, so it is not like somehow the A button is accidentally being pressed either.

There's a gnome hiding somewhere in your house speaking the words quietly  :busted:

Really though, I have no idea. Do you use an HDMI switcher or separate HDMI inputs? Something might be causing the console to go a little crazy if you're using a switch? No idea if that's even possible mind you.

I've never seen that happen before.  I usually don't keep many apps running in the background either.  Mainly just Netflix running in the background.

Give this a try:

Very strange issue for sure.

I have not experienced this yet.

Have you tried doing a complete shut down? (not putting it to sleep).

The only thing I've had was my game of Dead Rising on pause for a bio break coming back and its running. It' happened once or twice now. I will have to take a bit more notice now that I know others are having similar issues.

Thanks all for the fast replies...
AB, no HDMI splitter, and my cable box is actually no longer setup, so nothing going through the HDMI in either...

Trying to clear the cache now, although I am pretty sure I have already tried powering down completely, it is worth trying again just to make sure. (Y)

@ Haggis - That would be my next step, disconnecting Kinect and see if it happens.

Funny enough, when I put my One on just now, the NFL app was running on its own, and I absolutely 110% chose quit to shut it down last night just to see if it was somehow my imagination or not. Just weird...

I had Dead Rising do the same thing, which is actually why I started backing to the Home screen completely, as I was pausing the game but it would start on its own.
Reading your response leads me to believe this all somehow may in fact be due to Dead Rising somehow. As AB said, :iiam:

I have not played DR on my console yet, but if it is somehow at fault, did you happen to already download the large update for it? Has the issue persisted after the update?

Never had that happen to me.  Issues I have seen on the XBOX1 so far are....

At times, voice commands open different apps than what is stated.

Voice commands are sensitive at times, others its like you are yelling at the TV.  Even if the sound is muted.

Sometimes when turning off the X1, the light on the Kinect will go off, come back ok, go off, come back on...endless loop.  The light on the X1 stays solid.

Same thing happened to me at the weekend with BF4. Took a break between matches and was checking friends list/check NW etc etc, and then suddenly it opened the game again by itself

could it be a controller sticking? All those chips and dip you were eating watching the games this weekend?

Could it be a controller is trying to pair? Maybe stuck in the couch or something?

Hmmm, so it is not just me, and I do not have BF4 on my One either.

See below, good ideas, but I am fairly confident it is none of the above.

Do have the update installed yep.

So I cleared the cache, and immediately manually turned off the controller but left the console on. I then went and shoveled some snow for about 2 hours when all was said and done. Come back in my house, and I immediately notice my One is still on, which is weird as it should put itself into sleep mode after x amount of hours. Sure enough, turn on the console, and there is the NFL app home screen, totally running as if I opened the app, and this is on a totally clean the cache restart of the console.

I guess my next step is to disconnect Kinect completely. If it no longer does it, somehow my dog barking is opening apps, as that is the only "voice" Kinect would have detected since I restarted it all.

The thing that is driving me nuts is this is all pretty recent. It definitely has not done this since Day 1. Actually now that I think about it, it seems like it has been doing it ever since I finally checked out Dead Rising 3, which according to this post I made in the Dead Rising 3 Official thread which was on January 15th, and I started playing the game about 3 days before I posted that initial impression. So figure it has only be happening for approximately the last 10 days.

I would say Dead Rising 3 is somehow definitely the culprit (somehow, hey, I have heard stranger things), but I do see Andrew G also had the issue with BF4. So maybe it is somehow related to games that have gotten updates, and that borks the OS itself somehow, as we all know BF4 has seen it's fair share of updates.

It is now one of those things that is just going to drive me crazy, especially since now my One is apparently unable to automatically turn off after 1 hour (believe that is what I chose) since apps start running on their own before it shuts down.

Well if games are causing or Kinect is, then that definitely is a reason to call support. I guess if you really though a particular game was causing it, you could uninstall the game and see if things change.

Kinect wasn't the cause in my case, as I haven't even taken it out of the box.

I didn't even think anything of it at the time until DL posted today. I'll check again when I'm on if I can replicate it.

Are there any autoplay features? Such as those that start a game in the disc drive when the console is turned on instead of going to the dash? If so, try turning them off, might be bugged?

Not a bad idea, I will check and see if that is somehow enabled, although that does not really explain why the NFL app seems to launch on its own.

I thought of something else. Andrew, have you by any chance also checked out XBox Fitness?

XBox Fitness (which has crashed for me multiple times), DR3, and the NFL app, are the only 3 apps I can think of that are new since this all started happening.

I really cannot fathom it is Kinect, as it takes a pretty specific set of words to launch on app, words that I am very certain have not been spoken, unless of course it is reading things completely wrong, which it does not appear to be as it does work when I use it.

I also have seem some wacky behavior ever since I unhooked my cable box from the HDMI input. A few days ago out of nowhere I got a message that my cable box was unplugged, even though it has been over a month since I unplugged it. I think the OS itself is just a tad wonky, and hopefully these types of things get sorted out with the first update.

That is a very strange issue. I do not have this issue but can you completely turn the console all the way off (not hibernation) and turn it back on and see if that fixes it?

A couple of settings that might help that come to mind:

1. Try turning off the 'Resume Games Quickly (Beta)' option in the power section of settings if you had it turned on.

2. Regarding the cable box issue: is the cable box still setup under the 'TV & One Guide'/'Devices'/ section of settings? if so, you can clear out that and maybe it will stop bugging you.

3. The only auto play setting is in the 'Disc & Bluray' section

If this was a PC I'd say it was possibly infected with a trojan or malware which is forcing apps/programs to load/start. Xbox One does run Windows 8 as one of its OS's and Windows is the most targeted system for viruses, trojans and malware. Have you been visiting shady websites recently?

Just last night this happened two times.
Forza 5 and once again the NFL app opened on their own. It seems like the NFL app is the worst offender at this point in time.

Yep earlier on in the thread this was suggested so I have already tried the complete shutdown and clear the cache. Issue still persists.

1) I do have that Resume Games Quickly checked off, so I will try that. Good idea. (Y)

2) It will not let me clear it out unless I am missing something. I have tried a few times. Any help or how to do it if possible is appreciated, but I do not see anyway to clear what is already there.

3) Then whatever is the default is what I have left it at as I am pretty sure I have never visited that section in the settings.

Have only tried the browser once to see how the voice command worked with it. IIRC correctly I only went to Kotaku and also tried to get to here & Neogaf, both of which Kinect had an issue going to with just my voice. Other than 5 minutes on the browser to check out the Kinect voice commands, have not opened it since.

I think the best lead / suggestion is trying to turn off "Resume Games Quickly (Beta)" that trooper11 suggests. Am at work now so cannot try it out until later on today.
I am actually hoping this is not the culprit, as this is a good feature to have. But it makes sense it might be, especially since they make it a point of putting (Beta) after this setting.

Apologies if I have missed it, but is there a reason why you haven't tried Xbox Support yet? I haven't heard great things about them so I wouldn't expect much but it's worth a try surely?

I am genuinly quite intreaged by this, there doesn't seem to be anything logical to explain it judging by half the suggestions etc. It sounds like it could be a bug but then I would have expected this to hit a lot more people.

Ya know.. its been awhile since I checked out Dead Rising but I def had the issue where I swore I hit the pause button and while I was in the kitchen or something I heard the game start up again.  I know I have the resume games quickly checked off but I wonder if these bugs are related.  I havent had the issue of the main app starting up on its own (only used the NFL app a few times so far).  Ill test it out tonight to see if it does it.
