Use the New Tab page

You may have noticed that your New Tab page has changed. All of the features that you?ve come to know and love are still in this new version of Chrome, but we?ve made searching easier.

For those who know. The old hack no longer works to bring back the old new page style
1. Enter "chrome://flags" (without quotes) in the address bar (or ?omnibox? as Google terms it).
2. In the page that opens, scroll down until you locate the entry "Enable Instant Extended API Mac, Windows, Chrome OS". (It?s a long list. You might want to use Ctrl+F and the Find box).
3. In the little drop-down dialog at the bottom-left of the entry, click ?Disabled?
4. At the bottom-left of your window, there should be a button ?Relaunch Now?. Click it. Otherwise, just close and restart the browser.
5. If you want the new style back, click "Enabled" in step 3 above and restart the browser.
And there you have it ? the new tab page the way it used to look

However, I found a work around. Download the extension "New tab redirect"
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/new-tab-redirect/icpgjfneehieebagbmdbhnlpiopdcmna

Install it and where it says the URL enter this chrome://apps/

Save and done! The old style is back :)

Having the Google Search Bar really annoys me, if I want to search, I'm gonna do it in the dang ominbox.

Yeah I know what you mean. I made it so that new tab opens up your pin favorite sites instead of that google search page

This hack seems to work fine for me in Chrome version :32.0.1700.76

Another way to disable this bar is to use a privacy enabled search engine such as ixquick, for some reason it means it never turns up.

Final thoughts: isn't this new search location a little redundant? after all you can just type your query into the address bar from any page including the new tab bar. Also why does it seem that they no longer use windows 8 compliant UI? The check boxes and scrollbars are slightly different.

I don't care about the search bar. I wanted the Recently closed tabs option back in the corner on the new tabs page, but Iooks like they killed the feature for good this time.

I think its just moved to the settings drop down ( the 3 lines) menu in recent tabs

I'm actually using the beta now since the latest version of chrome has the application bug.
