Xbox One users are set to receive access to live and on-demand sports content through Microsoft's multi-year partnership with IPTV company, NeuLion.

With Microsoft's agreement to licence the NeuLion Sports Platform, Xbox One users will be able to view live 24/7 linear channels and on-demand sports broadcasts at up to 6 mbps per stream and at 60 frames per second, according to an announcement. Streams will also be integrated with real-time data for stats and highlights.

Multiple live sports feed captures are fed to NeuLion's cloud based service, which are then formatted and delivered to the Xbox One. Specific live sports content delivered by NeuLion on the console ? who previously worked on several Xbox 360 applications ?  is determined by Microsoft.

Microsoft currently offers two sports-centric apps on its next-gen hardware: an upgraded version of the existing ESPN experience and an NFL-specific app. The ESPN app features the same interface as the NFL app and retrieves users' preferences from their ESPN web accounts. The NFL on Xbox One app is a live feed of the NFL Network, including the NFL RedZone. It also draws content from the NFL and NFL site fantasy football websites so users can track their teams and leagues.

Polygon reached out to Microsoft and NeuLion for more information about the service's content and expected launch date.

Sounds good to me, you can look at this as a added benefit of having a gold subscription. The more media stuff is good but I'd like more of the game related things to come back soon.

What's the resolution of the streams? If it's anything less than HD, it's worthless. Trying to watch any sport in SD is painful, after having seen them in HD for so long now.

On the flip-side, if the streaming is good quality, this may solve my TV-cord cutting dilemma. I want to cut the cord, but I can't give up sports which is the only thing that's really keeping me from going all digital. Microsoft could have a huge win (in the US) on their hands if this turns out to be good.

Cool to see more media options like this.

I use the ESPN app for college football every season, so I would definitely use this service if the app is built well and the video quality is there for other sports.

Its deals like this that will allow me to drop my cable service eventually. Hopefully MS can make more deals for regular TV content as well.

They need to get a deal done with the nfl for games. Even if it has to go through Sunday ticket.... I was ###### this year that it wasn't offered through the ps3.

I have a sub for NHL GameCenter Live, whose provider is Neulion, like above. The stream on the 360,ps3,ios,android goes up to 4.5Mbps and 60 fps at 720p. It is buttery smooth and looks great(not as good as cable or ATSC,but great nonetheless). The only issue is it frequently buffers because their servers are a piece of crap(they actually shut some servers down during commercial, because that's when it really starts to buffer like crazy, till the game is back, not kidding you). Even with a 250Mbps internet connection, and having the bitrate down at 1.6Mbps,it still buffers(common issue with many folks). The web browser flash player version on the other hand uses different servers and a different protocol, and  works without a blip 99.9% of the time. Unfortunately the web browser version is also a piece of crap because it runs at a max of 3Mbps and 30fps(barf).

This is why I still have cable.

I would love for some of these US based channels to make their way over to the UK too, I really enjoy basketball at times so being able to watch them would be great!

Its like Microsoft and Sony have forgotten that there is a world outside the US, and maybe we would like features that the US get as well on our consoles. :/

Oh great, i can't wait to move to America and start watching NFL

Can't wait to have ya'!  Don't forget you have to pick a color for your mobility scooter.  The shotgun you get only comes in black.  Bring an extra bag for all the McDonalds coupons you're handed at customs.  Yeehaw!

These were too popular.  They ran out.  Better luck next time.

I know you guys want to blame MS and Sony but most times it's the content providers who hold these things back and limit them to the us only. It seems like it's a mess to work out deals to cover every EU nation.

I don't think anyone is blaming MS/Sony. It's 100% the content holders/providers that cause the issue. Not only do you have to deal with all the licensing between digital services of today, you could have deals made years ago which are still in place that need to be honoured.

I think when people make an issue with MS/Sony is because they concentrate their efforts on features that only so many countries can make use of, rather than something everyone can enjoy. Not much you can do about that. Movies, music and TV aren't going to be ignored at the end of the day.
