Rumor: "Nintendo Fusion" Is Nintendo's New Next-Gen System

A rumor has surfaced claiming that Nintendo is hard at work on its next generation of home and portable consoles, collectively known as "Fusion."

 

An anonymous source claims that Nintendo, which is reeling after an absolutely disastrous year, is working on the successor to the much-maligned Wii U. Called Nintendo Fusion, it's a collective name for Nintendo's next generation of both the home and portable consoles.

 

Nintendo actually purchased the nintendofusion.com domain in 2003 in support of the Nintendo Fusion Tour, a rock and video game music festival that ran for four years, but it has since gone dormant. And while news that Nintendo isn't just watching its money evaporate is not in itself remarkable, it is noteworthy that there are actual "possible" specs for the hardware, suggesting that development is relatively far along.

Nintendo News claims it has an "impeccable reputation" with regard to rumors but also notes, as do I, that none of this is substantiated and is subject to change and/or outright denial at any time. And while it's only been a little over a year since the Wii U was released, it's been such an unmitigated disaster that I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is in a rush to get a successor out the door. Whether or not it will do anything to restore its credibility is another matter entirely, but at this point, anything is better than nothing.

I think if Nintendo could build in Handheld-to-TV functionality similar to Sony's Vita-TV, but as part of the real console, that could be huge. The "fusion" name certainly lends itself to the thought of some combined gaming experience. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with. As long as they give the console a non-stupid name and actually market the thing, I think it could do well.

An HVD drive, really? Come on people.

The HVD makes this a "real" Nintendo rumor, as they're the ones who used mini-DVD's and DVD's read backwards to prevent piracy. An HVD drive is another perfect example - tested tech, massive storage space, impossible to pirate with dorm room tech.

HVD NOT HD-DVD. HVD is Holographic. They have several terabyte storage capacity on the standard drive with potential for much much more. they also have theoretical read speeds far in excess of any optical or magnetic drive, potentially rivalling todays SSDs. HOWEVER today it only exist as limited production backup systems and are extremely effective, and there are NO plants capable of pressing HVD disks with retail data, heck I don't think they even can be pressed but have to be written one by one. which theoretically could be an advantage as each disk could have a unique serial number. but even with the read and write speeds of HVD. writing each disk instead of pressing, on top of no plants having the equipment to handle them spells one word: EXPENSIVE.

There's to many wet dreams in those specs to be real. 

 

Also why would they support cablecard. an american standard that's barely used and would require custom US hardware, while Europe would need at least three models

DVB-S: with CAM reader and satelite tuner

DVB-C: with CAM and Cable tuner

DVB-T: with cam and terrestrial DVB-T tuner and MPEG2 and MPEG4 decoder depending on country. well MPEG 4 for all for future proofing actually. 

 

and even then it'd be pointless and for most people this would be interesting, they would already have PVR's with multiple tuners. Built in tuner make no sense, MS' solution is a lot better than a built in tuner. it gives you all the benefits of both and then some.

Yes, its obviously written by someone who just started writing down the most awesome stuff they could think of. The HVD thing is pretty much a give-away, like they went to a search engine and typed in "what comes after Blu-ray" to find out what kind of fantasy disc-drive they could put down.

 

And why mention Dolby TrueHD in the specs, what the point of that, other than Blu-ray movie playback-  In which case it would be a given to meet BD spec and would also have DTS HD-MA.

It would be an awesome machine, but it would also be ridiculously expensive, the game disks as well. and even if any third party devs made games for it, they wouldn't make them look any better than on the other "next" gen consoles anyway. and with the other two going for easy to use X86 hardware, why would they wan to spend resource develping for a yet another niche system with a different architecture. 

 

if Nintendo did make a new next gen system, it would be x86, anything else would be suicide today.

This is BS, there is no such thing as 'custom Adreno 420', this GPU is not OEM-configurable like the Mali or PowerVR series. Qualcomm doesn't share its GPU IP with anybody unlike ARM, additionally this GPU is exclusive to the Snapdragon 805 SoC family. Reason for which there has never been any sort of Adreno GPU on a non Qualcomm-based SoC.

yea  i dont buy it at all . all Fake tho nice sounding system  what i do think Nintendo may do or could do cause i know they wont just stop  with Wii U support  sorry but it will keep going but what they could do  is release a Firmware update  that could increase the clock speed  of the  Tri-core chip in the current system  and when you are gaming  they could increase  it to say 1.6 to 2.2ghz or so cause i am sure the  CPU or well the  MCM board Nintendo uses  is very much capable of those speeds  this  may help  and i don see why  that when you are not doing gaming but  just  using the OS or web browsing   or netflix or maby multitasking they can lower it down to a lower level till ya return to a game 

 

 

The only thing this will do is increase the watts  during gameplay and some other possible scenarios  but still when just running  Wii games  or  using any  of the apps  you downloaded from the eShop it run default clock and stay at the watts it does now

Even if these rumours are true, and I'm highly sceptical, Nintendo is going to have to do a lot more than simply throw specs at consumers.

 

Third-party support for Nintendo consoles is virtually nonexistent; it hasn't had much in the way of mature games for decades (in fact it has actively shunned them); it has no major IPs that are graphically innovative (it has no Halo, Killzone, Forza or GT); it has no online service to rival Xbox Live or PSN and needs more than the 60GB of storage listed for the basic model to handle digital distribution (even the 300GB version is way below that of the XB1 and PS4 (which are also very storage limited)).

 

If it's going to use the Wii U GamePad controller (the specs mention it can handle four of them) then Nintendo might as well give up now, as that was one of the main reasons the Wii U failed (it was gimmicky and massively increased the cost of the console).

 

Nintendo just doesn't have the reputation of Sony or Microsoft when it comes to console gaming, nor does it appeal to core gamers. A new console with better specs isn't going to fix anything.

it kinda does  as the FW is  the hardware software and  what not.  but it may not work in this case tho as it depends  on how the  Wii U hardware  and EFI and such are configured or something but  if it did work it be a solution .

 

Either way i love my Wii U  and  enjoy everything it offers  and with its last 4.0 system update it improved  things allot the only thing i  wish now is that  ubisoft could  have not delayed  Watch-dogs for any system cause that  is gonna be a sweet game to fire  up

While I agree the rumor is almost certainly bogus this particular point does not disprove anything. Yes Adreno is Qualcomm but since the CPU is an ARM Cortex and Qualcomm makes SoC's based off ARM Cortex cores then there is no reason Nintendo couldn't make a portable device with a Qualcomm SoC for the CPU/GPU. Again, I do agree the rumor is almost certainly false though.

For the love of God. Do NOT call it "Wii" anything. Get as far away from the name "Wii" as you can. Both because "Wii U" is a sales dud and because apparently a significant portion of your original "Wii" users are too uninformed and think that any new console with a "Wii" in the name is just a new version of the console they already have. Avoid the confusion, come up with an entirely new name. Nintendo Definitely NOT a Wii! (but we still run your old Wii and Wii U discs) Doh, even that has Wii in it.

Nintendo lost me with the motion controllers being default, and they've seriously fallen behind with raw horsepower.  I know it's possible to have good games without the latest and greatest processors and tons of RAM, but when game developers want to port games like Battlefield 4, and they've got to start editing the larger maps down so they will fit in RAM, or removing them altogether, then the customers will be the ones to suffer and look elsewhere for their gaming needs.

I borrowed and played CoD Black Ops (I owned it on PS3 at the time) on the original Wii, and it was an absolute joke.  I mean it looked so bad compared to the PS3/XBox360 it was hard for me to take it seriously.  I'm not saying they should focus "only" on building in raw horsepower, but they need to at least be somewhat comparable to their competitors so their customers don't feel cheated with multi-platform games.

Qualcomm has been using their own cores (Krait) since the Snapdragon S2 days (except for some low end S400 SoC series). Their Krait cores are architecturally comparable to the Cortex-A15 but are in no way similar at the uarch level. Qualcomm has the ARM architecture license from which they derive their own cores but they don't license their Krait designs or even anything from the Adreno series. Manufacturers willing to use Qualcomm chips always buy the SoCs, not the Krait/Adreno GPU IP.
