chrisj1968
yeah been around awhile in terms of years but been away for a time as I'm studying bible theology. enjoying it a lot. class doesn't start until march 5th for the new testament and a few weeks later, I start the old testament studies. I read my books at this point, highlighting key points here and there. just bored waiting so making good use of my time. so far I have learned how the original canon came about.. how a bishop marcion who died in AD 160 was ejected from his church for heresy. he didn't like the god of the OT and was selective of certain books and letters. after his removal from the church, he got with the Gnosticism(spelling?) movement which forced the church to figure out which books were authoritative. there were 3 criteria: 1. a book or letter had to be written by one of the apostles or their closest brethren 2. the book or letter had to follow genuine Christian doctrine 3. the book or letter had to be unanimously accepted by the churches. most of the books were written on either leather scrolls or papyrus parchments. the books were then sewn together. the original documents were written in common Greek so that facilitated easier translations to other languages. the second book for this course goes into how to properly interpret scriptures, use of pronouns, conjunctions, nouns, contrasts (ie wages of sin is death but gift of life is eternal life through Jesus Christ) the but means a contrast is being made. then dealing with issues of the barriers like culture, language, time, situation and covenant finally learned about how we got all the different versions of the English bibles. As the English language progressed and improved, the studies therefore improved, then scholars therefore, dare I say, used modern English for clarity? the KJV was translated into the NKJV new king james version and then the others. some folks couldn't understand the words therefore, wither thou goest etc.. kings English? or is it called queens English? I hope on the other end of all this studying, I learn more, and become a better person for it and become a positive influence in this community. in conclusion, I dropped my first class because they were getting into scholarly writing and I'm a laymen. I'm simply not one of those scholars who can write eloquently. I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy. this is really interesting stuff, if anyone has a question and I've learned about what you want to know, hit me up and I'll try to give you an answer. if I don't have the answer I'll simply say so. i'll pop in from time to time and see what's brewing around here. see ya all later ~Chris
