Windows 8.1 Update 1 Power Button On Start Screen

Recommended Posts

A minimum of 3 power buttons, 3 start buttons and 2 search buttons, lol.  I'm sure lots of people will still be "lost" though.  Tech support can be difficult.  :(  .

Hope mouse users can still multi-select a bunch of tiles and move/resize them all at once.  Someone mentioned Ctrl+click should still work.  Or will the "Customize" button still be available to mouse users on the Start screen?

The real issue is there's still two interfaces. "Modern UI" and the standard Desktop view. The confusion sets in when apps go "full-screen", it's a bit disorienting and difficult to know where you are/how to get back to where you were... it's a learning curve though and I'm sure people will find it a bit easier once they get the hang of it and Microsoft will continue to make strides in terms of the UI design (like this Update does). We're getting there...

there really shouldn't be any excuse anymore

the tuts are both simple, and straight forward.

The issues isn't necessarily that people don't know how to use it but that it is sort of annoying to use with all the jumping back and forth between Desktop apps and the environment for the Store Apps. Reading or watching tutorials (which I hear people love to spend their time on) does nothing to change that experience.

Agreed... if a user needs to sit through a tutorial or a walkthrough then arguably there is something wrong -- it's not intuitive.

Um. Windows 95 had a tutorial. So did Win98 (if I remember correctly), and XP!

they should also place all the control panel/pc settings all around the tiles too so its less confusing.

The Ribbon UI also needs a power button. How are users supposed to know how to right click on the Start Button? There's nothing on the screen telling them to do so!

Here's a thought, why not just have the new power button open the Settings Charm? It'll teach users to go there for power options. Didn't MSFT think of that?

But then that would just be a completely redundant and stupid shortcut. If they do go ahead with their plans to put a power button on the Start screen (a change I like BTW), they should remove it from the charms bar (it is not a Setting in any case). Or they can place the various shutdown related options in a drop-down menu that appears if you click the username. Either way is fine according to me although personally I don't see a huge aesthetic drawback to the button as shown above. What's all that blank space around the borders for - to stare at the Start screen wallpaper?

I think it might have been better to have restart and shutdown as options in the user area where sleep/logoff are also located. Remove it from the settings area where it is now and replace it with something else.

I?ve already posted this in the comments area for the front page article, but it seems to me (based on screenshots) that this is rather elegantly solved in Chrome OS:

If you mean add them to the menu below then I agree that's an acceptable alternative that ought to satisfy everyone:

So pretty much the same as above, right?

A much better solution.

And you point is what?

Chill dude, you ought to know who I was quoting. :) I just meant that you think it looks bad, I think it looks fine, and never the twain shall meet. Microsoft can satisfy everyone by adding the options to the menu shown above. No power button since it seems to take up precious blank space for some people, and easy access to the options as well.

The menu already contains Lock and Sign out, so why not the power options too?

I think it's better to add the Shutdown icon next to the user area instead of hiding the options in yet another menu. The icons is pretty much straight forward for the regular consumer.

Yeah, but seems some people have an antipathy towards the power icon using up blank space and supposedly "ruining" the pristine look of the Start screen, which is why I think this is a decent alternative. Same number of clicks too, i.e. press username to see menu or press power icon to see menu.

True that. But I think that the thought process of a normal consumer comes before the aesthetics of the icon. I think the normal consumer would be oblivious of the fact that the shutdown options are inside the user menu. There has to be an indication of a shutdown function if you ask me.

I mean, the user menu are for user account actions. That's why there's only Lock and Log off for the user. The system menu on the side has the option to shut down the system. So adding the options to the user menu would kinda ruin that hierarchy. Adding the icon would be a smarter thing to do in that respect.
