Customize open dialog box in Windows 8(.1)?

Recommended Posts

The open/save dialog box is one of my major annoyances in Windows as I never use the default options and I would like to customize it.

This is the default choice I'm talking about:

I want to add custom locations next to Desktop, Libraries, etc. There used to be a way of doing this is Windows 7 by using the registry editor and adding custom values (tutorial can be found here), but it doesn't work in Windows 8.1.

Does anyone have any solutions to this?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry I can't help you.  But thank you so much for sharing the Win 7 link.  I wish I'd known about this years ago!

I have to apologize, I made a typo while using regedit. The tutorial works for Windows 8.1, confirmed:

EDIT:

Didn's see virtorio's post, I'll use that one to mark the topic solved. Thanks!

It's worth noting that this depends on the developer and which of the open/save dialog systems they have chosen to use.

This will help for some apps, but not all. I have a completely different open/save dialog in all of my projects because I call the native ones with a wrapper..

Is that not the native dialogue in win 8/8.1?

The other one's not that big of an issue because it lists favorites, and you can put whatever you want there:

Yes, but there are two types, see one above.

I wish they would always use this one.  I hate not having my favorites.  Windows 7 has both as well.

Edit: This is also an issue with the save dialog.

Yeah, unfortunately the state of desktop and desktop apps seems to be the last of Microsoft's concerns nowadays.
