YouTube player and IE11 problems and/or rant

Recommended Posts

YouTube in its infinite wisdom decided to force me to use HTML5 player - no I am not in the HTML5 beta test thing.

Here are disadvantages of the HTML5 player I noticed,

No ability to switch to HD resolutions - click action falls through to the player's surface instead of changing the resolution. (Click 720p / 1080p just resumes or pauses the video).

Rarely switches to High Definition, maybe never.

Sometimes corrupts video like a boss.

Seeking more likely to get video stuck / reload the entire video.

Reading comments, then scrolling back to the top, results in the video player fast forwarding and corrupting itself, and resuming playback in 20 seconds or so.

These days I use Firefox for YouTube because there are no problems with the Adobe Flash player.

But what about IE11? Which chicken brained ###### at Google had the idea to give the middle finger to IE11 users?

It actually works decently for me. Not quite as good as Flash, but I didn't realize I was on HTML5 until the first time it corrupted the video and I right clicked on it.

Wow, although I cannot help, I didn't know about these problems neither, so I would just like to say thank you, as it is some information regarding ie11 (whether it be good or bad) :)

 most likely corporate policy: Screw Microsoft...

I used to get HTML5 Youtube on Chrome, but not IE, so it's not limited to IE. It drove me nuts, because I don't want to switch browsers just for one misbehaving site (and HTML5 YouTube as you have found out is a really crappy experience).

I had to install a user agent switcher for Chrome to permanently make the me appear as IE7 to YouTube, because no matter what other option I tried, I would always get f*cking HTML5 Youtube

Wow, I've never encountered those issues before. Then again, I'm using Firefox.

I could be wrong, but isn't this an issue on Microsoft's side, not Google? Just looking at these results, it seems that Microsoft have always been playing catchup with HTML5.

I did notice the forced HTML5 switch lately. Can't say I can complain much though; the Flash player is noticeably laggy on my laptop. To its credit, the HTML5 player works fine on my end.

Also using IE11 in this case.
