Video Recording Software

Question

I am soon going to be starting to do YouTube videos and things like that. Most of the time I will be using my Vlog camera so it's not an issue.

Though sometimes, I will want to use my Logitech HD C920 webcam to do recordings. What is the best free recording software, and the best paid software?

I don't need anything special, just record in full HD quality.

Though in the future I may want to do live streams (way down the road though) so if that software can incorporate those options as well, that would be nice.

I bought Fraps a long time ago and I'm still happy with it. 37$ for lifetime updates is a pretty good deal. Lossless recording with minimal performance penalty. It's very light on features though; I do my editing and converting in Virtual Dub. Action! is a more full-featured recording suite with support for on-the-fly compression (using Quicksync if your CPU supports it) and direct streaming. I like it a lot but I'm too comfortable with my current workflow to change. Dxtory is highly configurable and perhaps a good option as well, I personally haven't used it much.

Note that while hardware accelerated encoding is very fast (and thus great for streaming), it's also quite low quality. If you're publishing to Youtube, record in lossless quality and then do a high-quality compression using x264.

The question came up just a while ago - how did your webcam not come with recording software?  Why don't you just download it?

Clearly its software supports recording in its full HD, and even allows for uploading to youtube, etc.

That is FREE, what does it do that you need to do?

You "HEAR"  thats perfect -- I hear from people that beer sucks.. Guess what they are wrong ;)

Have you even freaking tried it?  It's FREE

Hmmmm lets seee software made by the maker of the hardware to showcase their product --- hmmm yeah sounds like it would suck to me ;)

You don't need it to do anything other than record what the camera sees -- so how bad could it suck?  You push a button it records, you push another button it stops ;)

BTW -- here is that real recent thread asking pretty much the same exact question
