PS4 and Xbox One resolution / frame rate discussion

Recommended Posts

As requested by some of our regular members, I have created and pinned this topic for you all to discuss anything and everything related to the PS4 and Xbox One resolution / FPS news and developments. Please use this topic if and when a developer announces what resolution/FPS their game will output and do not create individual topics. This is for the benefit of those who have no interest in the subject elsewhere in the Gamers' Hangout, while giving the rest of you a dedicated space to delve into the topic in as much detail as you wish. Please stay on topic and refrain from derailing the discussion towards topics such as PSN vs XBL.

All of the community rules apply as usual and this is not an invite to create a "war" between owners of each console.

IGN have compiled a list of details for currently available and soon to be released games here

Thank you,

Andrew.

Topic cleaned - Please read!

I'll be frank with you guys, this topic has one last shot at staying and then I'll be closing it. Whereever we go from there is then on your neck and if the Gamers' Hangout descends back into every game / topic being brought down to resolution discussion, you've no one to blame but yourself. Let's not forget it was some of the very vocal members of the GH who asked for this topic to be made in the first place, not the staff. Right now it serves a very specific purpose in the subforum and that is to allow those who are interested in technical details relating to the games and to discuss them freely while not spilling out into every other discussion where others aren't interested. That sounds like a pretty reasonable solution to me and why I agreed to create the topic in the first place. That does not mean that those of you who don't care can come in and thread crap with comments along the lines of "wow, x pages and this is still going", "who cares, gameplay is what matters" etc etc. People care about it and if you can't share the sentiment then needless to stay (again), don't post. This topic isn't for you if you are quite happy to buy a game and play it without any more thought about how it was made, what technical issues it has or what differences there are between platforms.

With that said, the following type of discussion is what I'd expect to see:

  • Screenshots and videos of games highlighting either their performance or differences
  • Hardware discussion, to any degree or depth. If you don't have an understanding you may still take part to learn more.
  • Articles and news either released by the developers, platform holders or any other informable source.
  • Your personal opinion about the above.

Bearing in mind this is just an example of acceptable comments, as I can't possibly include every imaginable comment on my own. However, It doesn't give you free roam to take rules into your own hands either and interpret what is and isn't flame bait or trolling. Above all else, the community rules are still in effect in this topic and even more so to allow it to continue with structure.

From here on anyone who derails/flames/trolls this topic will be given an instant warning, regardless of how long you have been a member or if believe yourself to be more correct than the next person. That includes those of you who decide to play the flamebait / trolling card when you don't agree with someone. If you can't agree to disagree with someone then drop the conversation and move on. This isn't a war or competition to be won, but if you continue a fight you'll find yourself in trouble more often than not. If you truly believe someone is breaking the community rules then use the report button. Complaining about it in this topic or elsewhere is not acceptable.

I'll be adding this comment to the OP so there are no excuses for not reading it nor will it be an excuse if you're caught breaking the above rules set out.

Does anyone have a list of games for each system spec wise?

I found this list the other day on IGN.

So if you use that list, and the other articles that have been on the web in regards to #resolutiongate, PS4 is doing much better from a resolution and framerate standpoint on multiplatform titles.

A lot of people are quick to point out that the One has plenty of games that are currently 1080p, and while this is indeed correct, what is worth nothing about most, if not all, of those games, is they are either from the sports or racing genre.

One must keep in mind that with those two respective genres, the backgrounds are either completely static and/or very limited in interaction. Thus much less resources are needed in order to render them as opposed to a game like Assassin's Creed IV and Call Of Duty: Ghosts, both of which feature environments that are much more interactive. Basically (with the exception of the invisible walls in COD), if you can see it, you can play in it. This means by their very nature those latter games are much more resource intensive. These games as a result are a better representation of the horsepower behind each system because of their more complex engines and environments.

So right now it is safe to say the PS4 has more power than the One. I do not think this is going out on a limb. I do not think this is an over exaggeration. I think that in this point in time it is indeed a fact.

Will the One catch up one day? Perhaps it will, but just as developers continue to optimize and make advancements in developing for it, they will also do so for the PS4. So the gap we see today will always exist, it just may not be so prominent. It will more than likely come down to stuff like AA, lighting, etc.

Even though both generations we have pretty much had one system that is arguably more powerful than the other (last gen was 360 > PS3, this gen it is PS4 > One) I think the biggest difference between this generation and the last generation is last generation the difference, while it existed, was actually much smaller compared to what we are currently seeing right now. 720p > 640p. Games averaging 30 fps (360) while only averaging 26 fps (PS3 (just an example, I know there are other examples that there is a larger difference, just as there are examples where there is less of a difference). As such, I do find it very interesting that it seems the same people who were incredibly quick to point out all of those differences last generation and made a fairly big deal out of those difference, are the same people who are now downplaying the differences in this current "next" generation, even though the numbers actually show a much larger discrepancy this generation as compared to last, especially in regards to frame rate.

With all that said, three of my favorite games so far since both consoles have launched have been Ryse, Dead Rising 3, and Forza 5. So resolution be damned. I enjoyed and am still enjoying the hell out of all 3. Would I have preferred all of those games were a higher resolution? As a consumer spending 100's of dollars on each system who is also a PC gamer, so I have actually been gaming at 1080p / 60 fps since both consoles were released last generation, yeah, I would have liked that my latest investment actually ran at the native resolution of the big HD TV I spent good money on. Absolutely. This does not change the fact I am still loving playing the games that are not running at a native resolution, but it is a disappointment. No way to sugar coat this fact. So I hope I am no doubt proven wrong, and ALL games will run 1080p / 60 fps in the near future. All I am saying is I am having a hard time envisioning this to be an absolute fact based on what we have initially seen thus far.

It was 30fps in pre-alpha, developers have said they are aiming for 60fps on release.

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/06/18/driveclub-will-support-all-ps4-wheels-studio-aiming-at-60fps/

They'll probably hit it now with the delay giving them more time, but I was just pointing out it's not confirmed either way, just "targetted".

Thanks for sharing that list GotBored, but you might want to list the ones that are confirmed and then a separate list for the rumored ones, just so its clear to anyone wanting to know where they are at.

So as Audioboxer said, Drive Club wouldn't be confirmed yet.

Oh and you left off Dying Light, which is 1080p @ 60fps on both consoles. It doesn't really change your percentages though.

Can I have a link to that? Last I saw it was confirmed 1080 on the PS4 but XB1 resolution wasn't released yet.

Its from the link in the OP from IGN.

They list the sources for each game that lead them to list it the way they did.

Of course most games that are no out yet are more based on rumor or the developer saying that they are 'targeting' something, so we will have to wait for release to know for sure.

This quote sums it all up:

Yeah, I think at this Point everyone should have get it that the PS4 has a more Powerful hardware. Can we in the Future make a News when Games run the same on both Consoles and ignore it when runs better on PS4? That could save us a lot of writing.

PS4 exclusive The Order 1886 will be running at only 30fps and will not be 1080p (but they keep claiming 1080p for a 1920x800 frame).

Apparently it's for "artistic reasons" and The Evil Within is doing the same.

Personally I hate black bars in games/movies, so that annoys me far more than the sub-1080 in this case. I'd actually prefer it to just be 720p

Well to be fair it is still 1080p image quality, nothing is being upscaled or stretched. Load a 1080p game on the PS4 just now and place pieces of black cardboard over your TV to the size required for the black panels to fit this aspect ratio. If they were running at 1920x800 and going fullscreen then it would be upscaled.

Just like how Blu-ray movies are 1080p, even though most are ~2.35:1 and actually 1920x800 picture.

The game is rendering 25% less pixels than a full 1080p frame and still can't manage 60fps? I thought 1080p/60fps was the golden standard. If Ryse just rendered 1600x900p without scaling, would that be ok with this standard?

How is this okay when there were countless topics on the sub-60fps Xbox games?

This is wrong argument on many levels. Movies are not rendered real time and the ratio is defined by film's size. And finally most movies are still only 24fps, so why does it matter if PS4 can do 60fps in some games when Xbox does only 30 (or pick any recent thread).

Where did I say it was okay?

I was addressing you saying this

Not much point bringing Ryse into the mix, it is upscaled as it's running at a lower resolution and a fullscreen ratio. Not to mention even if we're talking 30FPS, it's not locked and drops to low/mid 20s.

If you want to make a game at this ratio, cinematic or whatever you want to call it there actually is technically no way to do 1920x1080 - The ratio is what crops the image, and the correct word is crop, as it's not upscaled/stretched or anything else.

The full image being rendered is still 1080, but 280 of it is black bars (which obviously isn't taxing). However, the other 800p is still receiving the full rendering advantages, i.e it won't look blurred like a native 720 vs 1080 image would.

It's a coin toss however you want to look at it.

How is this okay when there were countless topics on the sub-60fps Xbox games?

I don't think anyone really minds the 30 vs 60FPS so much, unless it comes down to a genre where it should be standard, i.e fighting, racing and twitch shooters.

And how irritating I find that. TV's got wider to show the rest of the movie, so movies responded by going wider.

Few games will manage a constant and solid 60fps this gen. It's hard to do on PC unless you are running sli or crossfire or running your games at lower than high. To have a constant and solid 60fps you need an average fps of around 80fps and over (with vsync on). If devs want to push the envelope it wont be happening often.

What you want is an average of 60fps with dip not significantly below 50fps (with some sort of adaptive vsync or vsync/triple buffering). This can't be considered 1080p60 though as the framerate dip below 60fps.

This gen we wont see much real 1080p60 games. We will mostly see 1080p30 and 1080p60 dipping below the target of 60fps here and there.

Personally as long as the res is 1920x1080 and the game is not upscaled i can live with 30fps as long as it's not a racing, a fighting or a multiplayer fps game.
